The 2010-11 Campaign is Set

We've known the opponents for months and the opposing conferences for years, but now the details are filled in as the Steelers prepare to take the field again in hopes of turning around a 9-7 record in 2009-10 without making the playoffs.  Yesterday, the NFL formally released the 20010-11 schedule.

The Steelers had one of the easiest schedules at # 29 last year and come into this season with the 21st hardest with opponents having a 2009-10 record of 126-130-0.  For the record, strength of schedule at this point is meaningless but keeps sports writer's busy.  I've included the opponent's strength of schedule for entertainment purposes for the astute fan and for discussion by those that think it is worth discussing.

  • This schedule is pleasing to me since there are ten 1:00 p.m. games (same as last year)
  • Five Prime-Time Games (same as last year) including one Monday Night Football game and a NFL Network game. This schedule has a stretch of three consecutive Prime-Time games.  This shows the strength of the Steeler Nation when you get that many prime time games coming off a non playoff season.
  • The bye week will occur in Week 5.  Last year it occurred in week 8 which historically was an anomaly.
  • Using the 2009-10 results, the Steelers play five teams with losing records.
  • Using the 2009-10 results, the Steelers play three teams that finished at .500.
  • Using the 2009-10 results, the Steelers play six teams that finished with winning records.
  • Using the 2009-10 results, the Steelers play five playoff teams (Ravens, Bengals, Ravens, Patriots, Jets and the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints).
  • The Steelers have an unusual road stretch consisting of three consecutive road games in Miami, New Orleans and Cincinnati in mid-season.  5 of the first 8 games are on the road.
  • The Steelers also play three consecutive home games at the tail end of the season with the Bengals, Jets and Panthers visiting Heinz Field.
  • The 2010-11 season is a first in which all teams will play a divisional foe in Week 17.
