Fireside With Fury.. My PSU Editorial

Fireside with Fury

For new readers out there, the Fireside is an article that really has no rhyme or reason to it.  It is a compilation of things I’ve been thinking about. Typically it is about football but it can evolve into other things.

Fireside with Fury..A Mile High Edition

I write the first Fireside of the 2010 season over a mile in the air in front of a kid that won’t shut the hell up on a flight to the home of the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs.

In typical fashion, this Fireside has no rhyme or reason to it…just some thoughts to mull over heading into the bye week.

Fireside with Fury

I mentioned before that a unique hobby of mine is reading trophy cases when I go to high schools or colleges to referee.  During breaks, I'll walk around the gym or field houses and see what the particular institution has produced in terms of athletes.  This weekend, I was back in a gym after taking a good part of the summer season off.  This school is pretty famous, due to a Disney movie created in 2000...Remember the Titans.

Fireside with Fury; Some Random Musings

Last week I discussed a book written by Steelers sportswriter Jim Wexell called Steeler Nation, Pittsburgh Team, an American Phenomenon.  I stated that I've never really been a fan of Wexell but I thought this was a great book, especially if you love trivia or other useless information.  The gist behind the book is Wexell and his buddy take a road trip across the U.S. during the 2007 season's away games in search of Steelers fans, players, family members, coaches and local sports experts to better understand the following the Steelers have.  A few tidbits from Wexell's book that I found interesting:

Hail to Pitt.  If you watch them long enough they will break your heart, at least in Division I Basketball.  The Pitt Panthers and their number one seed exited the big dance in an exciting game against Villanova.  I'm a college basketball fan, mainly around the NCAA tournament.  I'll watch a few games during the regular season but other than that, consider me a college basketball novice.

Fireside with Fury - Super Bowl Edition

The fighters are scrambling out of MacDill Air Force Base (actually MacDill doesn't have fighters, they have tankers but they aren't too exciting).  The deployment to the war in Tampa is underway with the media frenzy leading the first wave.  Media day is behind us and they continue to invent stories or make a story appear to sound useful.
