Looks like Bell will be tagged again.

Despite some early optimism at getting a long-term deal done before the deadline, the #Steelers are expected to franchise tag RB Le’Veon Bell before the Tuesday deadline, barring a dramatic turn in talks. Both sides will keep working on a deal. https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/970 ... gr%5Etweet

Apparently Denver is letting him go because he can't cover worth a crap.

Davis understood that he struggled in pass coverage and expressed that he has been working hard to improve that area of his game. Davis spoke on his desire to remain on the field in key situations. “I would love to stay on the field during those key third downs and in the down packages. I’m definitely working on my coverage and just trying to have a reason for me to not be off the field”

Surely, knowing that he must improve on his coverage means he understands that he must accomplish that in order to improve his shelf life and value as a member of an elite defense.

Yeah, I think if the Steelers want a balanced ILB who can run sideline to sideline with great speed and quickness to stop the run and also drop into coverage that player is really only available in the draft.

All of these free agent ILBs are limited in some way, Hitchens, Williamson, etc, most are just really average to below average in pass coverage.

It is a shame about Kevin Pierre-Louis of KC. He was arrested at the end of January for pot possession, no driver license, etc. This guy has real Shazier type of talent, think of him as a poor man's Shazier, 6'0" 232 pounds, ran a 4.51 40, 28 reps, 39 inch vertical, 6.9 3 cone time, 4.02 short shuttle, just has elite athleticism and was being used to replace the increasingly ineffective Derrick Johnson.

So, this former 4th round pick of Seattle was traded to KC and was starting to play well and should have parlayed that into a nice free agent contract but then he gets arrested. He most likely has to serve some sort of suspension by the commish, so some team signing him wouldn't have him for all 16 games this year. And teams will probably be hesitant to give him a big money deal, knowing that Seattle gave up on him and now his latest troubles, can he be dependable? Is he just a tease?

If I am the Steelers maybe I take a chance on him. I would rather roll the dice with him then sign some of these other players like Williamson. And regardless they have to draft an ILB.

Well... Scunge, with all that said he's no Aldon Smith.... I'd take a look see. Bring him in for some one on one discussions about career. Sometimes folks have to hit rock bottom before they open their eyes to a new way of thinking. Perhaps with a fresh start and a very veteran filled locker room in Pittsburgh..., could be all it takes for him to fly right on his way to success. That's a feel good story in my book. ;)

Excluding off the field... I would take Pierre-Louis in a minute.

Yeah, the funny thing about Pierre-Louis is that he has been in some really tough spots. In Seattle with KJ Wright and Bobby Wagner, how do you get on the field? He is traded to KC and they have an equally crowded LBer crew of Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, etc.

I have been really intrigued by Louis, read up on him, he seems to be a real hard worker, has a work ethic, nobody seems to doubt that, but the off the field circumstances are the issue.

But maybe if the Steelers did their due diligence on him, maybe if he realizes what a great, fresh start he could get by signing with us, man, it might be a great signing. And the troubles that he has, the circumstances make it possible for us to sign him. If he didn't have those he would probably have cashed in on a vey nice payday.

I know one thing, he was a 4th rounder, but if he were in this draft, his combine performance would have been near or at the top for ILBs. He might be a 2nd rounder in this draft class.

This will influence Boz when he goes to the negotiating table....

Falcons gave kicker Matt Bryant a three-year, $10.5 million deal that includes a $2 million signing bonus and incentives that could boost total deal to $12 million, per

Boz's numbers are better than this kicker too. Just in 2017 Boz was 35 of 38 FG's with a long of 53 @ Heinz field, 37 of 39 XP's. Boz has an overall 89.5% since entering the league in 2015. Bryant's percentage is 87.2%. Boz is only 26 where Bryant is 40 something. Pay the man!

Athletically, I certainly liked what I saw from Louis, I just assumed he was off the table for the Steelers, so I stopped looking. Davis was the next best FA option when looking at the complete picture (cost, run/coverage, age, etc..). I still think they need to draft a stud ILB, even after they sign someone.

Steelafan77,

I think the Justin Tucker and Dan Bailey contracts are what Boz and his agent are looking at, those two have $17 and $22.5 Million contracts.

Tucker was something like 4 years, $17 million with $6 million signing bonus and the first two years of his salary guaranteed for a total of $10 million in guarantees.

Bailey signed a 7 year $22.5 million contract, with a $4 million signing bonus and $6.6 million guaranteed.

I see them putting the 2nd round tender on him and then finally giving him that new contract sometime in the middle of August. My guess? 4 years, $18 million, with a $6 million signing bonus and then year 2 of the deal he will have a $3-4 million roster bonus. That is usually what they have been doing in year 2 of their contracts lately, and then of course they will restructure that roster bonus to free up money for 2019, just as they have done with Cam Heyward, David Decastro, Stephon Tuitt, Antonio Brown, etc.

You're probably right, but an R2 tender is pretty risky. I would never pull that trigger, but there's only 7-8 good kickers in the league and someone who has been burned might not hestitate.

I know Tucker only got the R2 tender, but that was before they moved the XP back and before he really started nailing long game-winners.

Cap really isn't the issue, as the R1 tender is $1M more and probably still a little less than a L-T deal might average. I hope to contend for a SB then I'm not fucking around with my kicker over $1M.
