How much improvement can the Steelers expect from MacDonald and Outlaw

I am hoping McDonald is healthy this season. I personally feel he can be a big match up problem for D's. Faster than most LB's and if you take a DB to cover him it creates space for the WR's and Bell. James I think will improve like he has every year as well hopefully he takes a big step this year. He just turned 24 in June and that is still really young for a guy with a few seasons experience. I know he will never be really swift of foot but he is a big effort guy and has decently soft hands for his size. Grimble flashes on one play then disappears for 5 quarters it seems but he is also not on the field a whole lot. I kinda like the mix we have at TE currently. Here is to Fichtner using them all to there strengths and creating another layer for the defense's to worry about when they see us.

I think Bostic wins the job and there going to some UDFA making noise imo
Thomas is the Defense guy to watch .
I also going to say that Big Dan will have that fire and win the Backup Nose tackle job.
I like Gilmore and Sayers to fight for spots on the DL and PS
I also like Brian Allen think his second year is going to have a solid camp and prove more than a ST GUY.
Another guy is Trey Johnson the Fast cb from Villanova.
The OL line guys to be watching for is RJ Prince and Patrick Morris.

Patrick Morris for me is a big time sleeper, he might be somebody that could find his way on the roster and give the Steelers an option in 2020. Pouncey will be 30 years old and be a free agent at that point, do you give him another extension? There could be young players in 2020 that are going to cash in on large extensions and Pouncey may just have to be sacrificed to keep those other players.

For example, say Artie Burns really flourishes, becomes a top corner and we pick up his 5th year option but then sign him to a large extension. Keeping Pouncey and signing him to a new deal where he is making $7.5 million per year might not be possible.

Which is where Morris comes in, I can see him playing so well that the Steeler HAVE to keep him on the roster, would be poached off the practice squad. Then after two years on the team developing he is ready to step in as a starter in year 3, the 2020 season. For those that say, hey, Scunge you are nuts we have BJ Finney, he can play center! Sure, he could but isn't he be groomed to take Ramon Foster's starting spot? Cant't play two positions at once.

I see the two Florida Gators, Marcus Gilbert and Pouncey both being phased out over the next couple years.

Both are UFAs in 2020 will be 31 and 32, respectively. So one would hope that a contingency plan is in place. I could see one of them being signed to a 3(ish) year deal, but not both.

I'd be hard pressed to say which of those two has been less... errr... more durable over their careers. Just based on that history, I have to hope there's a replacement plan in place.

Well, Gilbert, when he is on the field, I do think he is a great RT, but he does miss time, he also has been suspended for PEDs, and he is unhappy about the contract that he signed, feels he is underpaid.

I think that the Steelers will move on from him and that is why they drafted Chuks in the 3rd round. Some outsiders may have thought of that as a surprise selection but it made sense to me knowing about Gilbert. I think that Chuks will get the Marvell Smith/Kelvin Beachum treatment, meaning that the plan will probably be that he starts on right side at RT and then eventually moves over to LT to replace Big Al when he retires.

Pouncey's brother Mike just signed for $7.5 million a year, and with all of the top centers going to be paid in the next couple years, the market for Pouncey may be such that he can make more leaving the Steelers. I think the Steelers should do everything possible between now and then to have a backup plan and keeping Morris in the fold may be part of that.

For those that don't know anything about Morris here is a little morsel for you, he was one of the most athletic center prospects to come out in quite some time.

6'2.5" 300 pounder ran a 5.09 40 (Pouncey 5.29), had 37 reps (Pouncey 25), 35.5" vertical jump (Pouncey 27"), 4.41 short shuttle (Pouncey 4.92), 7.34 3 cone (Pouncey 7.74)

Pouncey was thought to be one of the most athletic, smoothest centers to come out when he was drafted, yet Morris easily trumps him in nearly every category (Morris does not have the height or length). Morris just did not have that body of work in college, did not have the 3 years of starting to make teams draft him I guess.

This is one of those typical, classic Colbert undrafted gems. I feel Morris should have been at the very least a 4th round pick and we picked him up as an UDFA. Morris, Gilmore and Matthew Thomas all could have been taken in rounds 4-5 and we got them as UDFAs, this is one of the best UDFA hauls by Colbert in quite some time.

As the original fan of Patrick Morris and Okorafor...Both players have talent. They both have huge issues that need to be addressed technique wise.

I expect Morris takes Foster's job...Next season. Morris issues can be solved quickly because of his athleticism. Morris was ruined by the garbage spread offenses that have overtaken college football. Morris needs a ton of work on his pass sets...Footwork....Hand placement

Parker Collins is the young center to keep an eye on...He has similar technique issues to Morris without the athletic gifts...He also has a Cody Wallace type of disposition

I would have my money on Collins to get in the 1st fight of camp

Okorafor is a piece of clay....Long arms....Good disposition for the position. He needs so much work in the passing game

I just finished listening to the NFL talking heads...They feel the tight end position is on the way out of the NFL like the fullback was phased out 10-15 years ago. They had an interesting take.

-Players who have been drafted at the position have either busted or they cant handle the physicality of the NFL
-The quality players at the position for the most part are over 30
-They consider Engram and Kelce slot receivers because they are never asked or expected to block

Zach Ertz and George Kittle are the only examples of quality tight ends given

Should be real interesting

Oh, no doubt, but I was thinking longer term - I've thought of Finney as the heir apparent to Foster.

Finney was pretty up and down as a G, I thought, so it depends whether you’re an optimist or pessimist at heart.

The Steelers’ first practice of training camp opened with “Seven Shots,” the two-point conversion/short-yardage drill that has become the team’s jump-starting procedure in recent seasons.

It didn’t disappoint.

Among the offensive highlights:

-Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger hitting running back James Conner for a score on the first snap.

-Roethlisberger executing a pump-fake and then finding wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster in the back of the end zone.

-And quarterback Landry Jones drilling a pass to wide receiver James Washington on the final rep. Washington’s combat catch against cornerback Coty Sensabaugh at the goal line finished the drill at 4-3 in favor of the offense.

Any insights or thoughts from the group here about Heyward being listed as a DT now vs a DE?

Starting at about the 00:55 mark thru the 2:10 mark, Ben talks about eating healthier. Acknowledged a nutritionist is helping him. Said he hopes it helps him extend his career.

The funniest part of this "update" regarding Sean Davis moving to FS is that we literally dont have another viable option on the roster to man the spot.

Based on his tape and evolution with the Pack you can be assured that Morgan Burnett is gonna be lined up in the box more often than not.

Gotta tip my cap to the front office in their proactive approach to overhaul the D as they did and implement a new hybrid style attack sans Shazier.

I expect Bryan Allen to make a MAJOR leap forward and be the WOW factor in camp. Jaylen Samuels being the other standout in Latrobe with his multiple skill set.

IMO the only thing stopping Davis from playing his [IMO] "Natural Position" in the NFL was Mitchell already playing there. Although Mitchell was a poor excuse for FS he was played there because Tomlin. See the "More from Deebo thread" where I posted commentary on the 'coaching comparison' debate.

Davis is a legit candidate for the FS position. Now whether or not that's why Davis was originally drafted I don't pretend to know. There are other options for FS on the roster but in this case I think Davis is the natural fit with actual NFL experience that will pay off going forward. I agree with zabo. Between Burnett and Edmunds the slash player or SS/ILB will be maned up by both. I think they're hoping Allen is capable of boundary corner but can play either safety or corner. Be nice if they had a package where Allen [should he pan out] would be maned up on the bigger receivers and TE's. I too hope Allen steps up big.

Davis to FS is going to be a disaster IMO. Bad instincts, bad angles, poor tackler. He was the worst starter on our team last year and I expect he will be benched at some point early in the season. Not that his replacement(s) will fare much better.

I hope you're wrong TB. I don't argue anything you posted just that it's SBI Davis pan out at FS. If not perhaps Brian Allen will fare better in that position. That said, perhaps Davis with more time and space on the back end of the defense can adjust better and improve his tackling. He couldn't be worse than Mitchell, could he?

Looks like Finney gets to take over earlier than expected. Not really concerned there. Finney is the heir apparent anyway. Gives guys behind Finney on the depth chart a chance to step in and up as well. With the positive spin on his injury I Hope Foster is not injured seriously, and camp fights happen all the time. I expect more to come. Most we won't hear about.

Well I'm concerned! Means we are already depleting the little "known" depth we did have on the O-line. And fighting can be a good thing and it can show that there is some passion out there, but it can also start to divide/disrupt the locker room.

Hopefully all's well!

I would argue that Cam Sutton can play FS. He is being lined up in a lot of roles in camp, is supposedly very football smart and has the athletic ability. Don't discount his size. I made a post months back where I showed one third of the NFL were fielding smaller safeties that were Cam Sutton's height and weight. For example you look at the Rams FS LaMarcus Joyner, he is 5'8" and 190 pounds. Their former FS, Rodney McLeod left via free agency the year before, went to Philly and won a Super Bowl last season. How big is he? 5'10" 195, again same size as Cam Sutton.

To TB's point about Davis. Well, it remains to be seen, but one thing about tackling is that it is not really how bad Davis and the Steelers are at it, but how bad the entire NFL is at tackling. It is pervasive, bad, sloppy tackling is a league wide issue. Nobody wants to form tackle, everyone wants to arm tackle, or throw in a shoulder.

I do think Davis is right though that he will make more interceptions. Of his INTs last season, they came when he was deep down the field and was able to have large returns. When he was playing deep he was able to see the ball, see the QB and make a play on the ball. He made an INT in the Tennessee game and returned it 41 yards. He made an INT against Baltimore and returned it 35 yards.

Why were they wasting their time using him at SS again? If you have a player who can play deep, make INTs and have returns for 30, 40 yards, isn't that what you are looking for in a FS?

On a more positive note think about the options that now exist for Butler to deploy as a he sees fit in the "SUB" packages (more the norm than ever before mind you) :

Tuitt - Hargrave - Heyward - Watt

Burnett - Edmunds

Burns - Sutton - B. Allen - Davis - Haden

That is one helluva more athletic group than we have had a whole in some time IMHO boys ;)

It is ridiculously early to be making snap judgments but sure seems like Terrell Edmunds is improving daily and not just small improvements but making plays in coverage: athletic & anticipation plays. That pick he made on McDonald had some wow factor I haven't seen in a while...Early doors but good signs.

Seems like that sort of thing happens every year. Notwithstanding Foster, anyone feels so much as a hint of tightness or discomfort they get shutdown. Usually back on the field in a day or two.

Damn these guys with their annoying little injuries remind me of...me
So far this summer I’ve gollfed exactly 4 times and managed to injure myself all 4 times hurting my back neck and wrist. I even pulled a muscle in my back bending over the sink to brush my teeth before leaving to golf.

Point being I’m a 47 year old father of two who doesn’t get paid to train what’s their excuse?
Camps across the NFL aren’t a week old yet every hour a new injury no matter how minor is reported. Too much access and social media I guess.

I try to brush it off as just precautionary but why shouldn’t I be worried about Vance McDonald getting hurt. Cool nickname but the Outlaw kinda sucks.
What about Juju? Didn’t he have injury issues in his first training camp too? Is he going to toughen up or is he going be a frequent visitor to the injury report. AB is great but a rookie and DHB isn’t scaring anyone. Maybe signing Dez isn’t the worst idea in the world even though nobody else in the league has bothered to sign him

I’ve got a lot of friends back in the Pittsburgh area most of whom played high school and college football but are very casual Steelers fans not near the level of Steelers knowledge we find here at Steelerfury but a few of them mentioned how TJ watt was going to start getting injured if he overtrained with big brother JJ to which I said the problem with that is if Watt does go down there’s zero quality behind him.

So yeah I’m sure if it weren’t for social media we’d never even hear about a lot of these hopefully very minor injuries but in the back of my fragile eggshell mind I worry if these same players continue to show up on the injury report because depth behind them kinda sucks

Chris in Washington : Is Jaylen Samuels showing anything yet? I read a lot about his versatility after the draft and was curious if he was getting chance to show that with Bell out.

Ray Fittipaldo: He's doing well except for the backs on backers drill. He got embarrassed in that drill. Tomlin made him go five times in a row

I'm more concerned with McDonald, Watt will be fine. McDonald is the piece that can make the offense badly needs. He can take advantage of match-ups all over the field. If and of course, it is a big if McDonald can stay healthy I could easily see him being the Steelers #2 receiver for the season.

Yeppers.

I believe I called him the worst blocker as a fullback/H Back I have ever seen at the college level. That covers 30+ years

He didn't even try to block a big at NC State...Zero desire to block....He would avoid contact...Which I believe is the main reason he fell where he did in the draft

Don't get me wrong...He is very talented with the ball in his hands. Excellent in the passing game

He is nowhere close to seeing the field as contributor until his blocking improves. I wont be shocked if he is basically red-shirted this season

For an example. Willie Parker was 3 to 5 times more advanced as a blocker in comparison to Samuels.

The Spread offense is ruining football....At the end of the day blocking and tackling win games. Only so much space can be created and only so many players can be hidden

Not very encouraging this early on.

From the same article Clan.

Yep, he has had some ups & downs but the fact Steelers are putting him in coverage situations a ton and he is making plays = a good sign. In DB v WR drill on day 2 or 3 he had 3x pass breaks ups, some of those came against WRs. The lad has athletic talent galore and is finally healthy. With rookies, I look for gradual, incremental improvement and Edmunds is doing that so far.

After re-watching the Jags playoff game....

The Steelers must find a way to replace Bud Dupree....He is so fucking terrible. He does nothing well. Mercedes Lewis just put him on his ass again as I was posting this.

Steelers have no FS on the roster. I believe Edmunds can be a fine SS. Sean Davis despite leading the team in INTS and tackles just flat out sucks

I think the Steelers may be in big trouble defensively

That’s what I saw too. The opinion of Bud on this board ranges from complete bust to something like “average which is about all you can expect considering where he was drafted.”

I’ve got high hopes for Watt but beyond him I’m in the camp that our linebackers are weak sauce. If Heyward or Tuitt get dinged this season we are in a BAD place. I do like what I’m hearing out of Edmunds; he sounds like he will be ready from the start.

I have some faith in the defensive line...The group is talented and deep. If and its a big if Tuitt stays healthy the Steelers can hide some things.

I am hot and cold on Watt....I wont be shocked if he breaks out and is a stud...Also wont be shocked if his play is similar to last season...Up and down like a yo yo

I admit I love the Bostic and Burnett signings.

I don't believe Joe Haden is a 12 million dollar a year corner

Artie Burns is still a mystery to me

Can Mike Hilton continue to make plays?

I think the Steelers defense has a chance to be good enough to win a super bowl....ROLB and FS really fucking scare me.

The NFL is filled with question marks....The Steelers have as good of chance as any team to win it all(Pats and Eagles included)
