Steelers sign RB Abou Toure to practice squad

Bryan DeArdo - 6 hours ago

With DeAngelo Williams rightfully dominating the headlines, another running back quietly made his debut with the Black and Gold.

On Tuesday, the Steelers made their first roster move this postseason, signing rookie free agent running back About Toure to its practice squad. Toure is replacing defensive back Ross Ventrone on the team's practice squad, as Pittsburgh had an open roster position after releasing wide receiver/returner Jacoby Jones last week.

Toure, who previously spent time with the Colts and Cardinals, was most likely signed to the team some added depth at running back with the injury to Williams, who is currently day to day as he overcomes a right foot injury suffered in Pittsburgh's Week 17 win over the Browns.

The 6-2, 230-pound Toure spent his last two collegiate seasons at the University of Tennessee-Martin, where he rushed for 1,138 yards and eight touchdowns last season.

The Steelers lost running back Le’Veon Bell during Round One with the Bengals. They may not have running back DeAngelo Williams for Round Three.

While the Steelers have yet to add another running back to a depth chart that includes only tailbacks Fitzgerald Toussaint and Jordan Todman and fullback Will Johnson, the Steelers on Tuesday signed running back Abou Toure to the practice squad.

Toure, who played college football at Tennessee-Martin, was undrafted in 2015. He spent time with the Colts and Cardinals this year, appearing in three preseason games with the Colts.

The Steelers also have running back Rajion Neal on the practice squad.

Toure had a tryout on Tuesday with the Steelers, along with guard Lamar Mady and defensive end Brian Mihalik. Neither of the other two were signed, to the active roster or the practice squad.
