JP from Va.: With the trades being done, how close are the Steelers and Tuitt to a extension of his rookie contract?
Gerry Dulac: Very close. Should be any day now http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/stee ... 1709060112
Good News! Very happy with this little tidbit. Hopefully by Saturday we'll know the terms for Tuitt's extension.

What's going to be interesting is how Khan makes it all work.

Well....

I would bet Moats at 2.9ish and Hubbard at 1.7ish wont be offered contracts....additionally....something around 6.4 in dead cap comes off the books at the end of the year

2.9+1.7+6.4 = 11m ....additionally there is Tuitts 1.4 and the cap will increase...and we still have at least 3.6 in cap space...16M is way more than enough ...

I wont be surprised if pending draft choices if Mitchell Golden Gay Sensabaugh Haden are all looked at to be let go a year or 2 early. At least 1 or 2 those will be cut id guess

Hadens contract fucking explodes next year...11.9 to stay... 3.8 to go.....vs a 3.1ish hit this year

It would be really great if at least 1 of Allen or Sutton make him a cut

It's hardly rocket science....% of cap allocated to "stars" has remained fairly constant. Teams can afford to pay 8-10 such guys, depending on whether you're paying a franchise QB and how many "big big" stars you're paying vs. merely "big stars".

Steelers will have 12 guys in 2018 with cap hits over $7M (plus that $6M in dead money)....which includes Mitchell and Haden, one of whom will clearly be gone....next highest is Vance McDonald at $4.6M. This also includes Bell franchised and Shazier with the fifth year option.

For comparison, the 2018 NE Patriots have 6, and four more guys in that $5-$6M range.

Another way to look at it is PIT is pulling forward the cap relief when Ben retires in a year or two and they're paying a C1 QB. They only have maybe $15-$20M in cap space next year (including the carry over*) BEFORE Tuitt and Bell, but cutting Mitchell or Haden will take care of any shortfall.

Steelers have $11.07 M in cap space despite several moves last week, according to NFLPA data, which updates daily. The additions of defensive backs Joe Haden and J.J. Wilcox account for $5.541 M in 2017 cap hits on the surface (Steelers can save by reworking Wilcox's deal), but they also save by releasing Ross Cockrell, Senquez Golson and others. http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=21-0 ... 02849978-4
Which..., turns out to be $6Mil more than I had read about a couple days ago. If accurate. That's more wiggle room than I thought.

Mitchell or Haden next year will be almost a wash....hopefully Haden works out, otherwise those two alone are nearly $14.5M.

I don't see PIT having to make any major moves next year, outside of Bell (assuming Tuitt gets done). Won't be anyone significant they HAVE to extend next year, and if they need a few bucks they'll only be cutting declining, overpaid vets.
