This article brings plenty of optimism, and lulz:
https://www.si.com/nfl/2017/09/20/pitts ... efense-afc

"In 2015, Keith Butler, one of the NFL’s most aggressive and creative defensive coordinators, was hearing from his Steelers colleagues that he should push even harder. Install more of our designer blitzes and hybrid coverages, the assistant coaches said. We could have the most textured and complex defense in football."

Yes, long before the debacle against NE in the AFCC. That NE comment was very interesting - they showed a few looks pre-snap, but then dropped into vanilla zone schemes. WTF?!?

Lol.

Two ways to beat Brady:

1. Jam, hold, trip, beat up, or otherwise interfere with his receivers

and/or

2. Hit him

Everyone knows this.

We did neither.

Unless Cam, Tuitt, and Watt turn into absolute monsters that shred double-teams, we're going to do neither again.

That perspective will change after another dog-fight with the Ravens.....

Because he didn't have the players that could do it, that's why.

Thanks for the OP, Kodiak. I hadn't seen the article.

What I was going to say. Look at the players available to us on defense now. Look at the players available to us for the AFCCG. Do we think that maybe, just maybe, the coaches' decisions depend on the talent on the field?

Nah. They're just morons.

But as far as calling defenses to rush Brady and jam/play man against his receivers, I think we have a lot better talent to do that now than we did for the AFCCG, and I expect the defensive calls to look different the next time we see the Patriots.

He and the article specifically say they were doing just that, but "had to change" for NE....which, apparently, meant reverting to the stale, vanilla zone schemes Brady shreds every time. That's what is so hilarious, because the two statements are completely at odds with each other.

In other words, they recognized they had to do something different than what they had been putting on film, and decided that meant going away from what works against NE to doing what they normally failed spectacularly at doing against NE.

Thanks for posting Kodiak. I am a sceptic at this point and admit I'm not a believer yet. When I see it I'll believe it.

If this team faced the Falcons in a neutral stadium right now, they'd destroy the Steelers. That sentence wasn't easy to scribe either.

They are a work in progress.....I think this defense hinges on health, Haden, Sean Davis, and to lesser extent Mitchell not being the liability he's prone to being.

The potential is there. Unlike others, I have some confidence in Butler. But it's a fair concern/question, though, over just how effective Lake, Porter and Olsavsky have been at coaching players up.
