I'm pretty certain we will

need more strength down the middle -- the C position needs to be bolstered

I've read or heard (can't remember) quotes from Rutherford recently saying he still considered center a high priority. So I'd still bet on something happening.

Think about last year when we were worried about the defense. The team I'm sure knew Letang was out long term and they needed a Dman. Rumors were that JR was in on Shattenkirk, but Wash offered more and got him. JR responded by acquiring Hainsey and Streit. In hindsight not acquiring Shattenkirk was a blessing

So if we miss out on Brassard, I bet JR goes for quantity with some low level guys in response.

As for Grabner...eh, I'm really not as keen on him as everyone else. If our PK sucked, yeah definitely get him. He doesn't have many Even Strength goals and it just seems like he's more of an individual guy vs a team player (look at his assists).

I just don't think we'll see a winger of much significance added (perhaps a minor move).

EDIT: I would think if JR does something, it's gotta be in the next day or so since they had this long break and it would allow this player to get acclimated with Practices

Been reading that for a few days now.
I hope not.
It would be a bold move by Tampa because after next season Karlsson wants to get paid as the best D man in the league. Tampa won't be able to afford that(unless they purge) and that means he is a one year along with the rest of this season rental.
And the price to acquire Karlsson-probably would put a hole in the Tampa roster as far as their up and coming youngsters.

It's a chilling thought though.

NYR trade Grabner to the Devils for a #2 and a D prospect currently playing in KHL.

That could only be as a potential PKer, otherwise it makes little to no sense with the current roster.

Yeah, I think that'd be really dumb.

Much rather have a bottom pair defenseman than Cullen.

I think this only makes sense if Sheahan gets dealt.

This would make zero sense. Sheahan is way better than Cullen

This. I can't really believe they'd be thinking of going in this direction.

Unless they traded Sheahan for some defensive help, then turned around and got Cullen for a use bag of pucks to fill Sheahan's spot. I could be OK with that depending on what else we'd give up. But then again, that's a lot of moving pieces.

Tampa Bay adds Ryan McDonagh and JT Miller. Always thought McDonagh was a bit overrated, but anything that makes TB better is bad. Haven't seen what they gave up yet, though.

Pens added Josh Jooris, possible 4th liner/Wilkes Barre depth guy.

Possibly the biggest shocker of the Trade Deadline announcements is that Pens have apparently extended Hornqvist.

Rumored contract is 5 years @ 5.3 million.

I did not see that one coming.

That's a large aav. That's also more term than I was expecting them to offer, as well.

The AAV is better than expected. The term aligns with Malkin/Crosby/Kessel all being around 36 years old. Basically, it's right around the time the team should be blowing things up anyway.

Hornqvist is, what, the 4th least replaceable guy in the roster? Maybe 3rd?

This deal is a slam dunk for the Pens.

Sums it up correctly. Only Crosby is signed longer than the rest.

Signing Hornqvist was a priority. The length of the contract is the only thing I question.

I'm not sure if I just take Sid and Geno for granted but horny is my favorite guy on the team I think. Dude never takes a shift off and is the 2nd best net presence player in the world
