1. Congrats to Russ Martin. He did the right thing for himself and his family.
2. Thanks to Russ Martin for his tenure in Pittsburgh.
3. I don't blame the Pirates for not matching this offer. If it was say 4 years for $60 million there was room for debate.

Now that Russ Martin won't be making $16 million here next season, what will Nutting do with that money, because he was willing to pay RM the $15.3 million he offered for the 1-year deal if RM had taken that offer, right? Which of the following might he do?

1. Long-term deal(s) for Polanco or Walker?
2. 3-year deal(s) for Cisco or Volcano or someone else?
3. More money into the farm system?

Saw a funny tweet about the Martin signing that said (paraphrased): The Pirates insisted they were in the race for Martin. Then Toronto bought the track and kicked everybody out.

Not meaning to hi-jack the thread, but the Cardinals just acquired Jason Heyward for Shelby Miller.

I saw that as well.

I have no idea what the Braves were thinking.

The Pirates play their games, and the Cardinals play their games.
Last year I actually was watching the MLB Draft -- The Cardinals kept taking one flame throwing RHP after another.
Shelby Miller was expendable. Jason Heyward fills an immediate need, maybe for years to come.

I fear you are about 90% correct. The 10% where I have some doubt is that, knowing Nutting, he might opt for "refurbished" ski lifts.

I'd give Liriano three years way before I'd give Volquez three.

Volquez was very successful in spite of his secondary numbers. Doubt that shit keeps up longterm.

Sham, I'd agree.

No way the Bucs could have matched this offer. I was fine with 4 years, 5 is too much, but I don't blame Russell for doing what is right for himself and his family. Make as much as you can, brother. I'm glad it wasn't the Cubs though, would have hated to see him playing against us in a lot of division games each year.

Bling, you raise the elephant in the room. What about that 16 million.

not only now way they could have, but no way they should have even if they had the money. Jays are going to regret it in the out years.

Like Sham, I'd be happy giving Cisco a 3-year deal. Veteran lefty who can get the strikeout when you need it pitching @ PNC Park with the notch. He would complement Cole and AJ. Factor in Worley, Locke, and Morton and you have a good starting staff.

Actually, I've been kind to Nutting if you think about it. In theory, he offered a one-year $15+ million deal to BOTH Russ and Cisco. Had they both accepted those offers that would add up to $30 million. Subtract $8 million paid to AJ and that puts us @ $22 million. You could argue that Nutting expected one or both to decline -- that he just wanted the draft choices -- fair enough if you say that -- but that would prove Nutting may never really have intended to pay those men in the first place -- unless Cisco gets re-signed which is questionable at this point?

Martin is a massive, huge, glaring loss.

.....and the Pirates will be significantly worse without him.

Reportedly, the Cubs and Dodgers balked on the 5th year also.
Would've loved to had Martin remain a Bucco, but I'm truly past it already. We all knew this was coming.
Kudos to Huntington for getting out in front of this(Cervelli)...with fingers firmly crossed it works out!

Perhaps, but 5 years $82 M was too much to pay for a 34 yo catcher who just had a career year.

Blue Jays will be paying for at least two years of no production.

Bucs need to make their best offer and stick with it. There has been no player who has turned down an offer who has gotten anywhere close to what was offered. I am stunned that any player would do it. Sign the on year deal and do FA the following year.

Pirates need to find guys who will actually do shit in the playoffs on offense.

Either that, or they need that ace to match the other team's ace blow for blow.

Martin's season was Cinderella. I think he's replaceable. I'm more worried about Josh Harrison repeating his MVP-like effort and performance this year.
I'm also wondering where the Pirates will find power.
Maybe Marte + Polanco are ready to take that next step in their development.

I'm curious as to how far the team would have gotten if Bumgarner would have broken his arm the night before.

If they get Heyward with his rookie year performance. He has not been very good for the last several years. But the Cards have a lot of young pitching so ...
