At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
CIN: Alfredo Simon (0-2, 16.39 ERA)
PIT: Francisco Liriano (1-1, 4.64 ERA)

Quote:
The Reds will tangle with the Pirates on Saturday night in the second game of a three-game series at PNC Park.

Veteran right-hander Alfredo Simon will make his fifth appearance -- and fourth start -- of the season for the Reds. Simon enters the contest with an 0-2 record and a 16.39 ERA. Since his season debut, he has been bothered by right biceps tendinitis, an injury that led to the shortest start of his career, followed two days later by his first relief appearance since 2013.

Simon returned to the mound Sunday after being scratched from his last start with the tendinitis, causing him to drop his arm, flattening his pitches. He gave up eight earned runs and two homers in only 2 2/3 innings.

Francisco Liriano is 1-5 with a 3.96 ERA in 13 career starts against the Reds. He didn't factor into the decision in his second start of the year on April 8, allowing three runs over five innings in the Bucs' 6-5 win at Great American Ball Park.

Liriano is 1-1 with a 4.64 ERA to start the year. He appeared to find something in the final three innings of his most recent start against the D-backs at Chase Field. The left-hander allowed four runs over the first three frames on Sunday, then struck out the side in the fourth, worked a perfect fifth and retired three straight batters after a leadoff walk in the sixth.

Things to know about this game

• Over the past four seasons, Pirates pitchers have hit 37 Reds batters (including 11 in 2015 and one in '16), and Reds pitchers have hit 37 Pirates batters (including seven in '15 and four in '16), the most by any Major League team against any opponent.

• Pirates reliever Jared Hughes (left lat strain) could rejoin the Bucs' bullpen after completing a Minor League rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis. The right-handed ground-ball specialist is 10-6 with a 2.12 ERA in 139 appearances over the past two years.

• Liriano has limited most of the Reds' best hitters throughout his career. Joey Votto is 5-for-29 with 10 strikeouts against Liriano, and Jay Bruce is 5-for-28 with eight strikeouts.
