At PNC Park
Game time: 12:35PM ET
Probable starters:
SD: Christian Friedrich (4-7, 4.76 ERA)
PIT: Jameson Taillon (2-2, 3.29 ERA)

Quote:
In the thick of the National League's Wild Card race, the Pirates will hand the ball to rookie right-hander Jameson Taillon for Thursday afternoon's series finale against the Padres at PNC Park.

As a prospect, Taillon undoubtedly envisioned pitching in games like these, with playoff positioning on the line.

Of course, as of his start on Thursday, Taillon is no longer technically a prospect. He officially shed that label during his last time out, and owns a 3.29 ERA in 52 innings this season. He's throwing strikes at a 67-percent clip -- among the top 10 percent of big league starters -- and boasts a 7.17 strikeout-to-walk rate.

The Padres send Christian Friedrich to the hill. The 29-year-old lefty was mired in a funk for much of the past two months, but appears to have emerged from it. He's allowed five runs in 13 innings over his past two outings.

Things to know about this game

• The Pirates and Padres have each traded their closers this season, with Pittsburgh sending Mark Melancon to Washington and San Diego sending Fernando Rodney to Miami. Still, they're the only two National League teams who are undefeated when leading after eight innings.

• John Jaso did not start Wednesday's game because of general soreness. It appears unlikely he'll start Thursday either, with the lefty Friedrich on the hill. David Freese started at first on Wednesday with Jung Ho Kang at third.

• The Padres' streak of 18 consecutive road games with a home run ended in Wednesday's win. That was the longest mark in the Major Leagues this season, and the longest since the 2014 Nationals recorded 22 straight.

Eight strong innings from Taillon. As I've said before he's my favorite of the young arms.

Don't fuck this up, Feliz!

I'm a dinosaur. I admit it.
I don't like certain things in today's baseball.
Pitching a 3-hit shutout through 8 innings on 100 pitches.
No, we can't let him throw 110.
No, we can't let him try to get a quick out or two & yank him if he falters.
Yes, we have to use now 3 pitchers instead of 1 and hope the last two don't have an off day.

At least the Cleveland owner was better looking.

Is it too early to claim this kid as the ace of the staff over Cole?

Yes. This staff has no ace...they have three Jacks, two Jokers, and the Queen is now in the bullpen!

That's funny but sad at the same time.

I'll give the powers that be credit for almost completely overhauling the starting staff - which has been an anchor - from where we started the season. Now keep going and get all 4 wunderkids in the starting rotation on the reg.

We live or die in 2016 with the future, the future is now!

I take it Cole, Taillon and Kuhl are the Jacks? Nova and Vogelsong the jokers?

vogelsong been surprisingly good . victimized by shit offense and errors.. he will prob return to shit when the offense scores 6 runs for him. bring up bell.. want to see him and others. this current group is boring and frustrating to watch.

Pretty much. Jacks can become kings or even aces. Jokers are, well...

I'm with you, brother Bling.

To respond to Jack, I was not a fan of Taillon at first. Not that I don't think he's talented, he surely has talent. Just questioned his toughness and ability to battle. He might be changing my view on that, and I'm happier than fuck for him to do so.

Let's GO!!

I hear you MeanJoe. If I look unfavorably upon a Steeler, Pirate, Penguin and yes Celtic (sorry guys, I am all Boston when it comes to NBA basketball!), and that player proves me wrong, I am more than happy to be wrong because it means good for my team. More than happy to eat crow and admit I'm wrong.

And yes, Taillon is one of my guys. So is Freese.

When you are my guy, you know I will support you to the ground. In terms of posters here, you are one of those, my brother.

When it comes to Freese, damn straight. Fucking should sign him to a longer term contract, he's the shit and he's been a savior to our season given Kang's uneven performance this season.
