Willie Colon plays baseball and football in NY? He's like the fat Bo Jackson.

Actually, Bartolo may be fatter than Willie.

What about Pappelbon? Our bullpen has been horrible. That would let Watson/Melancon as middle relievers. He would set up the bullpen lineup nicely.

If it wasn't for our lousy bullpen, even with our starting pitching injuries, we would be in first place. I continue to say Pappelbon would solve a lot of problems.

Contrarian view : I think that the notion of the Pirates this year being one or two acquisitions away from getting to the postseason and contending is delusional.

Pedro's on a pace for nearly 40 errors -- 38 of them turning routine groundouts into men in scoring position. First base is a limp member (so to speak). Last year's Shark Tank is this year's Pigpen. SP has good days and bad days, with no confidence that Cole & Liriano are going to return to last year's form soon enough for it to make a difference.

Buying starters, given the front office's parsimony is a daydream. What is for sale at a price Nutting would pay is no improvement, and scrap heap reclamation projects inspire hope more than confidence.

That being the case, trading away the future to bandaid 2014 is improvident. Especially outfielders. Is Marte going to snap out of it & excel again ? Is Polanco going to get adjusted to the league's adjustment to him ? Neither of those is a sure enough thing to be talking about trading guys like Bell & Meadows -- OR trying to turn them into first basemen (like they did Lambo ?!) Tabata had one great year . . . How many times did people figure CF was set with Mondesi, Davis, Milledge & Morgen ? Is Harrison going to be able to sustain what he's doing ? Can we take being free of serious injuries in the OF for granted ?

We DO have a deep minor league roster. I suspect we're going to have to depend on that. & I'd rather see us muddle while it shapes up than trade it away for what might not work out (like Morneau).

The hope of small market teams is continual, slow-motion internal development, with new guys coming on line as fast as departing stars cash in. Do we have any of those to spare ? Sure ?

YMMV & probably does. 8-)
