Pedro isn't a 40 error a game player.. Yinzers always need someone to blame.. Baseball is s sport of good and bad streaks and much more failure than success.. 2014 pirates are not going anywhere deal with it and stop trying to find a scape goat

PZ- you are simply validating Nutting's LT strategy- which is the problem with this team.

The strategy you espouse will likely not produce a team that wins a championship. No one builds a team all from home grown talent- the pieces don't stay together long enough for that to happen....especially with the Pirates keeping their talent down on the farm too long so as to establish their hallowed "years of control".

You simply have to bring in some established talent to blend with your homegrown youngsters.

PS So Morneau went into a slump when we got him. Small sample size- he's currently having the best season of his career, and it's not all because of Coors Field.

Sometimes things make better sense when you consider (read) them slowly. Lemmie run this by you again --
Quote:
Is Marte going to snap out of it & excel again ?

Is Polanco going to get adjusted to the league's adjustment to him ? Neither of those is a sure enough thing to be talking about trading guys like Bell & Meadows -- OR trying to turn them into first basemen (like they did Lambo ?!)

Tabata had one great year . . . How many times did people figure CF was set with Mondesi, Davis, Milledge & Morgen ?

Is Harrison going to be able to sustain what he's doing ?

Can we take being free of serious injuries in the OF for granted ?

I'd rather have Bell & Meadows ready to step in if/when Marte takes a dump and/or Polanco struggles. That way Harrison can stay in the infield.

And where it REALLY hits home is having a quality replacement for Polanco ready to replace him -- possibly for McCutchen even before that.

Any spare $$$ should go to Martin -- without him, it's academic anyway.

A second consideration that bears on it is the reality check the All Star Game started with.

Wainright ate our lunch. But the AL ate his. Same deal with Bob Friend. Dominant in the NL, but the Yankees kicked him around like a soccer ball in the Series.

When we're estimating "good enough" we tend to use the NL competition we see as the benchmark. Simply put, between 1B, 3B & the Pigpen, I don't see us being "good enough" to start mortgaging our future for THIS YEAR.

Ask the Steelers how good a strategy that is . . .

Every team has flaws. The pen is fixable. The Pirates have a very passable offense even with their 1Bs not being very productive. The only fatal flaw with this teams is the lack of an ace. That could be a problem next year, and the year after that, and the year after that too. I hope Cole becomes an ace. I hope Glasnow, Kingham, or Taillon can become aces. Teams rarely get anywhere without an ace. I get not Mortgaging the future. But as I've said before if you have faith in your scouts and dev staff growing more talent shouldn't be such a painful proposition. No one says they should give away the farm. What I don't understand is why so many people are onboard with sacrificing the present.

How far can the Pirates go without an ace? http://hiddenvigorish.com/2014/07/how-f ... ut-an-ace/

Yeah you're right. 3 1/2 games is far to big a deficit to overcome.
