At Fenway Park
Game time: 7:10PM ET
Probable starters:
PIT: Jameson Taillon (0-0, -.-- ERA)
BOS: Chris Sale (0-0, -.-- ERA)

Quote:
In one of those rare occasions when the second game of the season should have the same intensity and excitement as the first, Chris Sale will make his official debut in a Red Sox uniform against the Pirates on Wednesday night.

The Pirates will counter with talented righty Jameson Taillon, who was the No. 2 pick in the 2010 Draft. Sale was picked 13th by the White Sox in the same Draft.

Fenway Park will be rocking for an occasion that has been anticipated since the lanky lefty ace was acquired from White Sox back on Dec. 6. Sale enjoyed a smooth initiation to the Red Sox during Spring Training but is now looking forward to pitching in games that count.

"It's a winning tradition here," Sale said recently. "Winning is at the top of the list. Everybody associated with the Boston Red Sox wants to win and you have to love that."

Taillon, who is entering his first full season in the Majors, went 5-4 with a 3.38 ERA in his 18-start initiation last year. This is Taillon's first visit to Fenway.
"Hopefully I just keep guys on the ground and don't have to worry about [the Green Monster]. These hitters know how to hit here," Taillon said. "They know how to lift the ball. Pretty short to left. Pretty short to right. That being said, if I'm putting guys on the ground, that shouldn't matter. We'll see. Me versus them."
The Red Sox have already come to know Sale's intensity.

"I think even in some of the functions we had in Spring Training, he's not looking to do things to kill time," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "There's a purpose to everything he does, and it has shown up and reared its head in other ways."

The Red Sox already had a healthy dose of respect for Sale's lethal arsenal when they would face him. Now, they look forward to that being someone else's problem.

"His strikeout to walk ratio just tells you that there is such above average strike-throwing ability with premium stuff, three quality pitches, a competitive spirit that's very evident," said Farrell. "From the first phone call with Chris when we acquired him, the way he spoke about the opportunity here, I know [Wednesday] is a day he's certainly looking forward to as well."

For Sale, the journey into Red Sox Nation is finally ready to start.

"I love it here," said Sale. "It's been great so far. All the guys are great top to bottom, staff included. It's been a good transition."
Things to know about this game

• Expect to see shortstop Jordy Mercer batting leadoff for the Pirates, as he often did last year against left-handers. Mercer is a career .311/.375/.480 hitter against lefties, although he has never faced Sale.

• Out of 225 batted balls in 2016, Francisco Cervelli connected for just four barrels -- batted balls whose exit velocity and launch angle give them at least a .500 expected average and expected 1.500 slugging percentage. Cervelli then notched a barrel in his very first game of this season, but thanks to Boston center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr., it turned into a 390-foot out -- Cervelli's second longest of the Statcast Era.

• In three career starts at Fenway, Sale is 1-1 with a 4.12 ERA. He was dominant in his most recent start in Boston, holding the Red Sox to one run over seven innings while striking out nine on June 21, 2016.

• If the Pirates have a late lead, manager Clint Hurdle will turn to Felipe Rivero, Daniel Hudson and closer Tony Watson -- in that order -- to finish the game. Meanwhile, Farrell will use the early days in the season to define roles with setup man Tyler Thornburg starting the year on the disabled list. Joe Kelly, Heath Hembree and Matt Barnes could all get chances to set up closer Craig Kimbrel.

So Sale and Taillon were selected in the same draft? Sale is a 5 time All Star, while Taillon is just now starting his first fulll major league season. Does anyone else feel that there is a problem with that?

Wow, I did not know that. Very disturbing to say the least.

Shit happens.

Early on, the experts thought Sale would blow out his arm because he had very bad mechanics.

He was a reliever to start.

Sale and Taillon as advertised.

Get some runs, Bucs.

Scratch...claw...anything.

Bucs really need some hitters. I get Sale was out there, but man these guys are horrible tonight. Idiot Sox fans chanting "Watson!"

Without equivocation, I can state that the vile organizational calumny and sullying of my good name by the Pitts-borough Steelers has been exceeded by the travails of the Pitts-borough Pirates as this sorry franchise has rendered my spirits into a most foul ague since the glory days of the company of Tanner et al.

However, my spirits and dare I say loins did react with delight upon this astounding outing by this strapping young specimen J. Taillon. Permit me to exclaim in the spirit of masculine comradery without any notions of pooftery that if this prospect ever finds himself temporarily on the disabled list, I would be most eager and obliging to take him under my tutelage as a stableboy, page or coachman with a promise to dote on every aspect of his recovery with my utmost care and attention.

Sincerely,

William Pitt the Elder
First Earl of Chatham

Looks like the home plate umpire wants to go home.

Taillon got me hard too, William Pitt.

Twatty escapes the wrath of Buccos fans tonight.

Well, somehow Watty and the blind HP ump still managed to not give the game away right there.

So we've got that going for us. BTW awesome throw/tag by Cutch + Cervelli earlier to keep this thing scoreless.

And so, on to the 11th . . . how cold is it up there, Jack?

Stupid fucking Korean.

We really really REALLY miss Kang's bat.

And Diaz' because of the stupid bullshit ownership re-signing Cervelli to that deal.
