At PNC Park
Game time: 1:05PM ET
Probable starters:
ATL: Mike Foltynewicz (0-0, -.-- ERA)
PIT: Ivan Nova (0-0, -.-- ERA)

Quote:
If Mother Nature cooperates, the Pirates will play their home opener against the Braves on Friday afternoon at PNC Park. But with snow predicted throughout the morning hours, Pittsburgh's Ivan Nova and Atlanta's Mike Foltynewicz will either have to pitch in inclement conditions or wait an additional day to make their respective season debuts.

"We have been and will continue to closely monitor the weather forecast for tomorrow afternoon," Pirates spokesman Brian Warecki said. "While the temperatures will be in the lower range for early April in Pittsburgh, we believe that we will open the 2017 season at PNC Park as scheduled. We will, of course, continue to work closely with our weather service providers and monitor any developments overnight and into the morning hours."

Whether he starts on Friday or as part of a potential doubleheader on Saturday, Nova will be looking to extend the success he had after being acquired from the Yankees at last year's non-waiver Trade Deadline. The 30-year-old posted a 3.06 ERA in the 11 starts made for the Pirates. He had a 2.45 ERA and three complete games in six starts at PNC Park.

The Braves had originally planned to start knuckleballer R.A. Dickey but pushed his start back one day because he would have had trouble getting a feel for his signature pitch in the cold and wet conditions.

Foltynewicz is now scheduled to make this start with just one extra day of rest. The highly talented young hurler showed flashes of his potential last season, but in order to take the next step, he must avoid the mental lapses he experienced when he encountered adversity while posting a 4.31 ERA in 22 starts last year.

"It's probably like Opening Day weather for me in high school [in northern Illinois]," Foltynewicz said. "So this will be right up my alley. It will be very interesting to see what happens."

Three things to know about this game

• Foltynewicz showed off his powerful right arm with his velocity on both his four-seam and two-seam fastballs last season. The four-seamer averaged 95.8 mph, ranked sixth among starters with at least 750 thrown, while the two-seamer averaged 95.5 mph (third among starters with at least 250 thrown).

• After Thursday's rainout at Fenway Park, the Pirates shuffled their rotation. Chad Kuhl, scheduled to start in Boston, will now start on Saturday. Tyler Glasnow, who had been slated to start Saturday's game, will pitch Monday's series opener against the Reds. Gerrit Cole will start Sunday's series finale, as scheduled.

• In a pregame ceremony, both teams and everyone in attendance will observe a moment of silence for longtime Pirates media relations employee Sally O'Leary, longtime Major League Baseball executive Katy Feeney and Canonsburg police officer Scott Bashioum, all of whom passed away in the last year. Bashioum's four children will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. The Pirates will also honor alumnus Bob Friend in a pregame ceremony.

Good to see the Pirate hitters easing into the season

They were in Boston against perhaps the two best pitchers in the AL - Porcello and Sale. So far today, four runs on eight hits. Not bad.

We have the pitching, dudes.

If the hitting comes around...we could be good.

Josh Bell looks like he has been spending some time working on his defense.

He has been quite good at first base this young season...that was a nice play.

Yep. Besides the 5th inning of the opener and Bastardo's 12th inning abortion in the second game, I like what I see.

Well...now we can add LeBlanc's stinker.

LeBlanc = LeSuck.

Why we took a gamble on Tyler Webb and then let him go back for Bastardo is something I'll never understand.

Cutch 3-4 today and a walk.

That's the Cutch we need.

Let's get some runs because I have no faith in Twatty right now.
