At PNC Park
Game time: 7:15PM ET
Probable starters:
NYM: Zack Wheeler (2-5, 3.74 ERA)
PIT: Gerrit Cole (2-5, 3.36 ERA)

Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole labored in his last start on May 22 against the Braves. But he will have the chance to place that poor outing behind him and get back on track against Zack Wheeler and the Mets Saturday at 7:15 p.m. ET at PNC Park.

Cole surrendered 10 hits, including two home runs, and gave up five earned runs in only 4 2/3 innings -- his shortest outing of the season -- in a 5-2 loss against the Braves, raising his season ERA to 3.36. It was an uncharacteristic performance from Cole, considering he had only allowed six runs in 34 innings in his previous five starts.

Wheeler has only lasted through six innings in three of his eight starts, but he has been solid in his last four outings, only allowing five earned runs in 21 2/3 innings (2.08 ERA) during that span.

Things to know about this game

• The Pirates' lineup has struggled to score runs when Cole starts on the mound. After scoring only two runs in Cole's last start, Cole now has a run-support average of 2.80, which is the second lowest in the National League and the fourth lowest in the Majors.

• While Cole struggled in his last outing, his slider was still effective. Cole's 15 sliders resulted in five called strikes and only one hit, according to Statcast.

• Neil Walker reached an important milestone in his hometown. Walker, a Pittsburgh native, brought home three runs on Friday to reach 500 for his career. Walker so far has eight doubles, one triple, four home runs and 17 RBI in May. He is tied for third in the National League with eight doubles so far in the month. ... _pk=490837

Nice for Cutch to finally have a big game with the bat. It is sad how far off he has fallen. We are probably looking at the last few weeks of Andrew McCutchen as a Pirate, and it doesn't much resemble the player he was for the better part of a decade. I'll forget about what he is now and remember him as one of the all-time great Pirates players. I hope his career has a renaissance no matter what uniform he is wearing. But damn if it wouldn't be nice if he gives the fans a few more chances to see him be the Cutch we remember while he is still wearing a gold P.

On the all-time Pirate team, I think he's your centerfielder.
