At PNC Park
Game time: 8:00PM ET
Probable starters:
ARI: Randall Delgado (1-0, 3.82 ERA)
PIT: Trevor Williams (2-3, 5.93 ERA)

Quote:
The last time D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was given the day off on Sept. 19, 2016, he hit three home runs and five RBIs over the next two games.

Pirates starting pitcher Trevor Williams is hoping that doesn't happen on Monday, when Goldschmidt returns to the lineup on Memorial Day after getting the day off on Sunday.

"We have to remember that while he's out there doing his thing, he's not a machine and he needs a moment off of his feet," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "I think we won the game he didn't play, and then the next game he hit a couple home runs. He went crazy for a little while, so I think that hopes everyone understand the importance of rest."

Williams will be making his fourth start of the season for the Pirates in Jameson Taillon's spot in the rotation. Through three starts, the right-hander is yet to register a quality start, but he is 1-1 and has allowed seven runs in 15 2/3 innings. In his last start, he allowed three runs in five innings while striking out six in a no-decision against the Braves.

D-backs pitcher Randall Delgado will look to build off his success against the White Sox when he makes his second start of the season.

In his first start of the season on Wednesday, the right-hander allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk over four innings. His longest outing of the year at 61 pitches led to an 8-6 D-backs' win and allowed their bullpen to get some much-needed rest. Lovullo hopes Delgado can progress to 70-75 pitches over five innings on Monday.

"We'll look for that, but if he's pitching efficiently and things are going in a good direction, we may go more than that," Lovullo said. "But I'm not going to say one way or another what the plan is. He's going to give us some of that feedback with how he's doing and how the game is being thrown."

Things to know about this game

• Outfielder Andrew McCutchen was moved to the No. 6 spot in the lineup for the Pirates' series against the Mets, and it appeared to pay off. McCutchen entered Sunday's finale against New York with a .286 on-base percentage on the season, but in Saturday's win, he went 2-for-3 with two walks, a home run and three RBIs.

• Lovullo said he will continue giving different players a chance to rest this series. Brandon Drury and David Peralta had the day off Saturday. Lovullo said the off-days give players a chance to rest their legs and are key during this 11-game road trip, the D-backs' longest since 2010.

• Williams faced the D-backs in Arizona on May 13, earning a 4-3 win by allowing just one earned run -- a solo home run to Nick Ahmed -- on four hits and one walk over five innings.

Can anyone give me a legitimate reason why Alan Hanson should be on a major league roster?

How long are the Pirates going to pretend Watson is a closer?

Awful.

Watson got the win off of Mc Cutchen's homer in the 9th. 4-3, Bucs raise it.

I never did care for him.

Glad Cutch rescued the win, Watson didn't earn it.

That's one of those dumb MLB rules. Guy nearly blows the game and he gets the win.

Depends, my friend, on how one defines "legitimate".
If you're Nutting, legitimate = just over $500000 out of pocket.

At least the Cleveland owner was better looking.

Thanks. That's what I thought.

The NL Central is there for the taking...although I'm sure at any time, the Cubs will make a move to take the division over...but you never know.

The losses of Kang (which should have been expected) and Marte (probably unexpected) really sting because the pitching ain't half bad.

What stings even more is the criminal way in which Nutting and Neal did not build off the successes of 2013-2015.

And I don't think it would have taken a huge investment to to do it...but they decided to go wholesale cheap instead.

What a way to betray the fans' trust.
