At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
MIA: Dan Straily (4-4, 3.59 ERA)
PIT: Trevor Williams (3-3, 4.57 ERA)

Quote:
Pirates right-hander Trevor Williams produced his best outing of the season in his last start, but his spot in the rotation still might be in jeopardy with right-hander Jameson Taillon set to return sometime next week. The former Miami prospect will have another opportunity to show that he deserves a permanent spot when he takes the mound against right-hander Dan Straily and the Marlins on Saturday at PNC Park.

Williams replaced Taillon in the rotation in May after Taillon was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He struggled in his first start against the Dodgers, giving up six earned runs in only three innings. But he has steadily improved since then, providing quality starts in his last two outings.

Taillon, though, will most likely replace either Williams, Chad Kuhl or Tyler Glasnow when he returns to the rotation. Williams' ERA (4.26) in six starts is the lowest of the three pitchers.

"We've got three guys that have been in the mix," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "You can look at Glasnow, you can look at Kuhl, you can look at Williams and the volumes of work. You can do your own speculation. What we've tried to do is look at the volume of work, what they've done well, where their areas of improvement need to be, who's best served at staying here, who's best served going back [to Triple-A Indianapolis] and still continuing to start and giving us the depth option there."

Straily is also coming off back-to-back quality starts, allowing four earned runs in 13 2/3 innings in that span, but he labored in his last start against the Pirates earlier in the season. He surrendered three runs and issued three walks in just 5 1/3 innings against the Bucs on April 29.

Three things to know about this game

• Hurdle said Elias Diaz will get the majority of the reps as catcher, with Jacob Stallings starting occasionally, as he did Friday. Diaz and Stallings are filling in for injured catchers Francisco Cervelli (concussion) and Chris Stewart (left hamstring strain).

• Marlins catcher J.T Realmuto is expected to return to the lineup after taking a scheduled day off on Friday. Realmuto has enjoyed success outside the confines of Marlins Park, hitting 37-of-102 (.363) on the road, which is fifth in the Majors, and he has recorded at least one hit in 23 of his 26 road games.

• Miami's most consistent starter all season, Straily had his streak of three straight victories snapped in his last outing. Still, he was effective in his setback at the Cubs, giving up three runs in seven innings. He has impressive strikeout numbers, averaging 9.18 per nine innings. The right-hander also has been effective keeping runners off the bases, sporting a WHIP of 1.09, while opponents are batting .198 off him.
