At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
COL: German Marquez (4-3, 4.44 ERA)
PIT: Chad Kuhl (1-5, 5.63 ERA)

Quote:
The Colorado Rockies brought a potent attack to PNC Park for their three-game series with the Pirates, but the home team also has been cooking up some offense of its own.

Since May 23, the Pirates led Major League Baseball with a .295 batting average, and since June 1 they have been even better, hitting .313 and averaging 6.1 runs per game going into Tuesday. The club had at least 10 hits in nine of its past 11 games and scored 10 or more runs three times since May 24.

All this without All-Star outfielder Starling Marte, who is scheduled to return next month after serving an 80-game suspension for failing a PED test.

Rockies right-hander German Marquez (4-3, 4.44 ERA) is scheduled to face the suddenly rejuvenated lineup in Wednesday's series finale. He is one of four rookies who have started for Colorado this season.

Righty Chad Kuhl, the scheduled Pirates starter, has lost five straight decisions since beating Atlanta on April 8.

Several players have contributed to the Pirates' improvement at the plate. Josh Harrison's 10-game hitting streak before Tuesday was tied with Colorado's Charlie Blackmon for the second-longest active streak in the National League.

"Nobody's been more consistent than Josh," manager Clint Hurdle said.

Perhaps even more encouraging, Andrew McCutchen is showing signs of breaking out of a hitting malaise that tarnished his 2016 season and carried over to 2017. Since being dropped to the sixth spot in the batting order May 26, the former MVP was 23-for-59 (.390) with a 1.123 OPS before homering twice in Tuesday's game.

Hard-hit balls that once were outs are now hits, Hurdle acknowledged.

"Those numbers have picked up," Hurdle said. "Quality at-bats have picked up. Pitches per at-bats have picked up, swing/chase rates have lowered. Also, I think [hitting] can be contagious. Andrew gets hot, seems to [affect] the whole lineup at times. [Adam] Frazier and Harrison have done a really good job at the top. I love the fact that we've kept working at it. It got into a bad place, they continued to work, and we started seeing the numbers starting to rise."

Three things to know about this game

• Reigning NL batting champ DJ LeMahieu makes his living a little differently than most right-handed hitters. Entering Tuesday, the second baseman had hit more than half his batted balls in play (51.6 percent) to the opposite field this season, the highest rate of any qualified righty (min. 100 BIP). The approach is certainly working for LeMahieu, who was batting .365 when going the other way as opposed to .305 when he pulls the ball to the left side.

• Kuhl has not exceeded five innings in each of his last nine starts. During that stretch he has a 7.05 ERA with 30 strikeouts and 17 walks in 37 innings, and an opponents' OPS of .938.

• Marquez is 2-1 with a 3.24 ERA in five road starts, compared to 2-2 with a 5.70 ERA at home. He has struck out 31 in 25 innings on the road.

For all we think they've been winning more lately, they're 5-5 over their last ten.

They need to go on a win streak, or 4.5 out will never change.

As long as Glasnow and Kuhl do not improve, I don't see it.

I think they shipped Glasnow back to Indy.
