At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
TB: Alex Cobb (6-5, 4.05 ERA)
PIT: Trevor Williams (3-3, 5.09 ERA)

Quote:
Alex Cobb (6-5, 4.05) and the Rays pitchers get a chance to swing the bat as the team heads to Pittsburgh to face hot-hitting Andrew McCutchen and the Pirates on Tuesday night at PNC Park.

Cobb and fellow Rays starter Chris Archer prepared Saturday by taking batting practice at Tropicana Field, with Cobb swatting half a dozen homers. He said he always looks forward to the chance for in-game hitting.

"It's never as much fun as BP, but it's really a no-lose situation for us up there, not much expected," Cobb said. "But there's some big moments in the game where we can impact it, whether it's getting the runner over or just making a pitcher work a little harder. I take pride in it. I want to succeed when I'm up there, but it's still a lot of fun."

On the mound, Cobb is steadily improving as he works back from 2015 Tommy John surgery. He has three straight quality starts and seven in his last 10 outings. Most importantly, his pitches are all close to returning to form, he said.

"The crispness and repetitiveness of each pitch is showing up more each time out," Cobb said. "I obviously wanted it to be back by now, but by the second half, it's going to kind of transition to not even thinking about anything. Just going out there and trying to execute pitches, and this whole process will be over with, hopefully."

Cobb will line up against Pirates starter Trevor Williams, who is still looking for his first Major League hit. He put together a quality start against the Brewers on Wednesday, holding them to three runs in six innings while striking out a career-high seven batters.

Things to know about this game

• Since bottoming out with a .200 average on May 23, McCutchen has been the hottest hitter in the National League. Entering Sunday, the five-time All-Star was batting .388 since May 24, second in the Majors to only Seattle's Ben Gamel (.391). He also has eight home runs and 24 RBIs over that span, both top-15 figures in the Majors.

• One more home run from Josh Bell before July 11 would tie Ralph Kiner's Pirates rookie record of 15 round-trippers before the All-Star break. Bell is fifth among MLB rookies with 14 homers and 35 runs scored.

• The Rays ought to hope they're not trailing when Felipe Rivero enters the game: among those with 40 innings, the Bucs reliever is tops in the Majors with a 0.70 WHIP and is sixth overall with 14 holds.
