At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
TB: Chris Archer (6-4, 3.88 ERA)
PIT: Jameson Taillon (3-2, 3.33 ERA)

Quote:
Chris Archer and Jameson Taillon will square off in the finale of the Rays-Pirates three-game series at 7:05 p.m. ET on Thursday at PNC Park.

Archer is coming off an outing against Baltimore last Friday where he got a career-high-tying 14 runs of support and won for the first time in his career when yielding five or more runs. Archer has electric stuff, but he came away from Friday's start with a season-low four strikeouts, his lowest total since Sept. 16, 2016, at Baltimore.

Archer also threw just 92 pitches in his six innings, snapping a club-record streak of throwing 100-plus pitches in 24 consecutive starts dating back to Aug. 12, 2016.

"I think Archer is throwing the ball really well," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "I think there have been times throughout this year that he has given us every opportunity to win, and just maybe that night our bats were quiet or we were outpitched on the other side.

"But he has done some good things. His last start, I remember us talking after the game maybe he wasn't his sharpest, but maybe it was our turn as an offense to pick him up a little. So it was good to see that we did that."

Archer will be opposed by Taillon, who will make his 10th start of the season. He received a no-decision in his last outing, when the Pirates won, 4-3, in St. Louis on Friday night. He gave up two runs over six innings.

Taillon is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in three starts since returning from the disabled list on June 12 (testicular cancer surgery on May 8).

Three things to know about this game:

• Taillon has not faced the Rays. He is 1-1 with a 2.39 ERA in four career starts during Interleague Play, and he's 0-0 with a 2.92 ERA against American League clubs this season.

• Archer has only faced the Pirates once. That meeting came on June 24, 2014, at Tropicana Field, when he took the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) in seven innings.

• Taillon piled up a career-high 16 swinging strikes in his last start against the Cardinals. A career-high 13 of those came on fastballs, either two- or four-seamers.
