At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
SF: Johnny Cueto (5-7, 4.20 ERA)
PIT: Gerrit Cole (6-6, 4.11 ERA)

Quote:
Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole will look to wrap up June with his fifth win of the month when Pittsburgh hosts San Francisco for the opener of a three-game set on Friday night. Giants veteran righty Johnny Cueto, meanwhile, aims to avoid going winless in June.

Cole has been the benefactor of big run support in his past three starts, as the Pirates have averaged 6.7 runs per per game. But the veteran has also done his part, holding opponents to just three runs over 20 innings (1.35 ERA) in that span.

But Cole was struggling, posting a 10.71 ERA in a four-start stretch from May 22-June 8. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle attributed Cole tweaking his delivery as a reason for his recent turnaround.

"He just readdressed his delivery," Hurdle said. "He got on top of the ball, got into his legs -- in a positive fashion, not dropping and driving, but staying tall on the backside. All the pitches have sharpened up. This what he was able to work his way through during the hard period. That's where he's at right now."

The results might not be there for Cueto in terms of his win-loss record this month, but he's pitched well minus a rough start against the Royals on June 14. In his past five outings, Cueto is 0-3 with a 3.82 ERA, a 1.43 WHIP and 25 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings.

Three things to know about this game

• The Giants have struggled away from AT&T Park, as the club's .302 road win percentage (13-30) is the second worst in the National League. San Francisco took three out of four last season at PNC Park.

• Over Cole's rough four-start stretch from May 22-June 8, 16.5 percent of batted balls against him were barrels -- those with a combination of exit velocity and launch angle that is ideal for hitters. But in three outings since, that barrel rate has dropped to 3.6 percent, and Cole's expected batting average allowed based on the quality of contact against him has fallen from .389 to .216.

• No batter has faced Cueto more throughout his MLB career than Pirates star Andrew McCutchen. Cutch holds a .288 career (19-for-66) average with four homers and six RBIs against Cueto.

Saw a story that Hurdle is dialing back Freese's playing time because "I believe I've played him too much".

Rest Metrics, again?

Like when he started Pedro Florimon at SS in a key doubleheader game against the Cubs in 2015?

On the bright side, Andrew McCutchen tweeted out a nice little video to let everyone know he and his wife are expecting their first child in December.

You'll never let Florimon go, will you? Thankfully, he's in the Phillies organization now.

I will be really surprised if Cole is in a Pirates uniform a week from today. Of course, with these kind of outings, it's only hurting the Pirates' return on any potential deal.

Pirates lost the division by two games.

Hurdle potentially gave away one of those games by weakening his lineup in that second game of the DH. Against Jon Lester, of all people...did we really need to make his job easier?

Also in that year was the infamous game against the Cardinals where he sent Jeff Locke up to face the Cards' batters a third time even though Locke was clearly struggling against them the first two times through, and we escaped through those times with the lead mostly due to luck.

Those two games right there could have been the difference of a bye to the division series and having one shot against Jake Arrieta. Those are the types of games, late in the season, where the manager can encourage his team to go all out by setting the proper tone...and Hurdle sent a message that rest metrics and sticking to the pitching plan were more important to him.

So no...I will never let it go.
