At Wrigley Field
Game time: 2:20PM ET
Probable starters:
PIT: Trevor Williams (3-3, 4.67 ERA)
CHC: Eddie Butler (4-3, 4.18 ERA)

Quote:
If there's been a saving grace for the Cubs over an up-and-down first half of the season, it's been their success against the National League Central. Chicago is 21-15 against teams in the division, compared to 21-28 vs. the rest of the Majors.

The Cubs thus have an opportunity to grab some momentum to take into the break, as they'll begin a three-game set against the Pirates on Friday at Wrigley Field.

"Our biggest fixes are inside the clubhouse. This is a team that is largely the same club that averaged 100 wins over the last two years," Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said. "We'll get to a point of playing at that level because of the guys who are here. We'll work hard to improve the club, and it may happen or it may not happen. The biggest fix is rest and the talented players we have."

The Pirates will look to throw a wrench into those plans.

Trevor Williams (3-3, 4.67 ERA) will get the ball for the opener. The right-hander began the year in the bullpen, but has started to settle into the rotation, posting quality starts in each of his last three outings.

Opposing Williams will be Cubs righty Eddie Butler (4-3, 4.18 ERA), who will look to bounce back from an outing on Saturday that saw him cruise through the first three innings before falling apart in the fourth.

Butler has posted a 3.18 ERA at Wrigley Field this season and has held teams to three runs or fewer in each of his five home starts.

Things to know about this game

• Butler has made 11.2 percent of his pitches while facing a three-ball count this season. That is up significantly from his 2016 rate of 8.3 percent and is fifth highest among all pitchers with at least 750 total pitches in '17.

• The Pirates and Cubs have already faced off in three series this year, though neither team has had much success at home. The Pirates swept the Cubs in three games at Wrigley Field from April 14-16, while the Cubs have won four of six against the Bucs at PNC Park.

• While Williams hasn't been charged with any of the losses, the Pirates have dropped each of his last four outings. The team's last win with him on the mound came on June 10 against Miami, while Williams' last win was back on June 4.

If McCutchen slid correctly and not sideways like an amateur, he's safe there.

I swear Rizzo has over 20 HR's against the Pirates in the past 3-4 seasons. Good grief.

Bucs pick their way through a minefield there to avoid scoring before the Cubs. Well done, chaps!
