At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
STL: Mike Leake (6-7, 3.12 ERA)
PIT: Gerrit Cole (7-7, 4.43 ERA)

Quote:
The National League Central has been a tight battle for the first half. Despite holding sub-.500 records, the Cardinals and Pirates are still in the mix of things as the second half begins. They will get a chance to start making up some ground immediately after the All-Star break with a three-game series in Pittsburgh.

The Pirates enter Friday in the midst of a stretch against the three teams ahead of them in the NL Central having faced the Cubs before the break and playing the Brewers in a four-game series immediately after the Cardinals. But the Pirates aren't focusing on the fact that they're playing division foes.

"Every game is important. It doesn't matter who it is or if it's someone in our division or not. Every game matters," outfielder Andrew McCutchen said. "We could sweep everyone in our division and lose the next 10 against people who aren't in our division, so it really doesn't matter. What matters is winning. Regardless of who we're playing, we've got to go out and try to win the ballgame."

The Cardinals will try to continue the success they had before the All-Star break in Pittsburgh. St. Louis has won or tied its past four series and is getting healthier as the season progresses.

"What I see is opportunity. This could be one of the greatest seasons of any of those guys careers because of how much we've been written off," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said of the second half. "That to me is such an exciting thought about us putting something together and pushing hard and remembering all the things we've already gone through in half a season."

Righty Gerrit Cole (7-7, 4.43 ERA) will take the mound for Pirates on Friday night. He has won four of his last five starts, including a 7-3 victory in St. Louis in which he allowed just five hits and one run over six innings. He also pitched a 2-1 loss to the Cardinals on April 19, giving up six hits and two runs over six.

The right-hander is coming off a 5-2 victory over the Phillies in his last start. However, in his previous outing, he allowed seven runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings in a 13-5 loss against the Giants.

Righty Mike Leake (6-7, 3.12 ERA), who is 1-0 with two quality starts against the Pirates this season, will start the opener for St. Louis.
In his last start July 5, Leake pitched just 3 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits against the Marlins. In his three starts before that, however, he gave up six runs through 20 innings, including an 8-4 win over the Pirates.

Things to know about this game

• The Pirates won the most recent series against the Cards, taking two of three June 23-25. On April 17-19, St. Louis swept a three-game series. Both series were at Busch Stadium.

• Matt Carpenter has a .375 average against Cole in his career. The infielder has had 12 hits in his 32 at-bats against the right-hander, four of which were home runs.

• Friday night's game is the first of a 10-game road trip for the Cardinals that also includes visits to New York (Mets) and Chicago (Cubs). The Cards are coming off a 10-game homestand before the All-Star break.
