At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
MIL: Zach Davies (11-4, 5.08 ERA)
PIT: Gerrit Cole (7-7, 4.35 ERA)

Quote:
Zach Davies hasn't been dominant on the mound this season, but he's won plenty of starts thanks to some help from his offense. The Brewers will try to continue to provide Davies run support when they face Gerrit Cole and the Pirates on Wednesday at PNC Park.

Davies has registered five quality starts in 19 outings this season, but he is tied for second in wins (11) in the National League despite his ERA (5.08) being tied for third worst among qualified NL starters. But he leads the NL in run support with 6.16 runs per game, with the Brewers averaging eight runs over his last four starts, all of which he has registered a win.

Full Game Coverage

"I like when Zach pitches because we score a lot of runs," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "I feel like that's the best part about it, because I feel like it's a good day for our offense because we've done a really good job of scoring. And Zach has helped in that regard."

Cole, meanwhile, has experienced an up-and-down season, but he's pitched well in both his starts against the Brewers, holding the Crew to two runs in 14 innings in those outings. He has pitched better of late, as well. In five of Cole's last six starts, he has thrown at least six innings and allowed two runs or fewer.

Three things to know about this game

• Davies has thrown 8.6 percent of his pitches to one of the two lower corners of the strike zone this season, according to Statcast's detailed zone. That's the third-highest rate in MLB among more than 75 pitchers with at least 1,500 total pitches, behind only the Cardinals' Mike Leake and the D-backs' Zack Greinke.

• Brewers second baseman Jonathan Villar is expected to return to the lineup after taking a scheduled off-day on Tuesday. After a rough start at the plate to begin the season, Villar is hitting .309 in his last nine games.

• Jordy Mercer has posted the second-best fielding percentage (.985) at shortstop so far this season behind the Giants Brandon Crawford's .991 mark. Since the start of the 2014 season, Mercer leads NL shortstops in fielding percentage (.984) and ranks second in starts at the position (474).
