At AT&T Park
Game time: 10:15PM ET
Probable starters:
PIT: Jameson Taillon (6-3, 3.08 ERA)
SF: Madison Bumgarner (0-4, 3.57 ERA)

Quote:
Giants ace Madison Bumgarner will start the second game of a three-game series against the Pirates on Tuesday night, his third outing since rejoining San Francisco's rotation July 15. If he can keep the ball inside AT&T Park, he should be fine. But that's been an issue lately.

Bumgarner has allowed seven runs in 13 1/3 innings since returning from the disabled list, all on home runs. Bumgarner has served up a pair of homers in each of his last two starts, the first time in his career he has given up multiple homers in back-to-back starts. He may find a welcome matchup in the Pirates, who rank ahead of only the Giants with 96 homers this season.

Bumgarner, who defeated the Pirates in the 2014 National League Wild Card Game, is 2-4 with a 2.97 ERA in six regular-season starts against Pittsburgh. He'll line up Tuesday against right-hander Jameson Taillon, who threw a career-high 116 pitches over 5 1/3 innings in a win over the Brewers on Thursday at PNC Park. He has not completed six innings in any of his three starts this month, but unlike Bumgarner, he has succeeded in preventing the long ball. Taillon has allowed only one homer in seven starts since undergoing surgery for testicular cancer, going 4-2 with a 2.87 ERA during that stretch.

Things to know about this game

• Bumgarner has dominated Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen in 18 career plate appearances, allowing only three hits -- all singles. He has struggled against infielders Josh Harrison (4-for-11, home run) and David Freese (4-for-10, homer, double).

• Four is the magic number for the Pirates. They have won each of their last 11 games when scoring at least four runs, and they've gone 17-2 in their last 19 such games. They are 44-11 overall this season when scoring at least four runs and just 6-39 when they score fewer than four.

• The 428-foot home run that the Padres' Cory Spangenberg hit off Bumgarner last Thursday at AT&T Park was the longest Bumgarner has allowed to a left-handed hitter over the past three seasons. It also was the fourth-longest he's allowed at home during that time. The blast came off a 90.3 mph fastball; the other three homers allowed by Bumgarner in his last two starts were off curveballs.

Wow, that sucked. Fortunately I was only checking in on the score during intermission here at the Hollywood Bowl, so the night wasn't a complete bust (The Pines of Rome on a summer night sure soothes the soul 8-) ).

Everybody else won tonight so the Buccos better get back on their winning track tomorrow.

This is what has me worried. But I didn't see either game, so I'm not sure how bad it was.
