At AT&T Park
Game time: 3:45PM ET
Probable starters:
PIT: Trevor Williams (4-4, 4.74 ERA)
SF: Jeff Samardzija (4-11, 5.05 ERA)

Quote:
The Giants wrap up a 10-game homestead, their longest of the season, on Wednesday with their series finale against the Pirates.

The Bucs will start Trevor Williams (4-4, 4.74 ERA) before heading south to San Diego for another three-game set. Williams has made one career start against the Giants. Earlier this month, he spun six innings of two-run ball and was in line for a win before the Giants rallied late for a 5-3 victory.

Potential Giants trade chip Jeff Samardzija (4-11, 5.05 ERA) takes the mound looking to right the ship. He allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings in his shortest start since going four innings May 30 against the Washington Nationals.

Despite a rough July where he's posted a 6.94 ERA, the 32-year-old continues to lead the Majors with a 9.2 strikeouts/walks ratio. He's allowed two walks this month and 15 in 128 1/3 innings this season. In addition, he's surrendered a homer in each of his last four starts, his longest such streak this season.

Things to know about this game

• Part of Samardzija's strikeout successes this season has come thanks to his ability to fool batters. Opposing batters have missed on 38 percent of their swings when chasing Samardzija while ahead in the count. That's among more than 100 starting pitchers who have thrown at least 150 pitches out of the zone.

• John Jaso is one of two active Bucs who have homered against Samardzija. Jaso or Adam Frazier could get the start in right field against the righty. Jaso is 3-for-7 lifetime against Samardzija while Frazier is 1-for-3.

• Pirates standout Andrew McCutchen has thrived against Samardzija, slashing .405/.488/.595 in 43 career plate appearances. Samardzjia does, however, have 12 strikeouts against the surging outfielder.

Marte and Polanco are both dumb as a box of rocks.

Tons of talent with zero fundamentals or awareness.

The Pirates are the Browns of baseball. Haven't sniffed a championship in over 30 years.

Sad...but true.

Well, they flirted with going to the World Series in the early 90's, but yeah.
