At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
SD: Travis Wood (2-3, 6.42 ERA)
PIT: Ivan Nova (10-8, 3.75 ERA)

Quote:
For the second time in a week, the Padres and Pirates begin a three-game series Friday, with lefty Travis Wood and right-hander Ivan Nova facing off at PNC Park.

After beating San Diego in his Padres debut at Petco Park, Wood's past two wins as a starter have come against the Pirates. In last week's series opener, he allowed only two hits against Pittsburgh, one of which was an Andrew McCutchen homer that provided the only two runs the Bucs scored against him in his six innings.

Nova did not fare as well in his start in the series vs. San Diego on July 29. The Padres came a home run shy of hitting for the cycle against him in the first, finishing with eight hits and four runs scored off the righy, as they took two of three games in the series.

But Nova has performed better at home throughout the season. He's 3-6 with a 4.42 ERA on the road, but at PNC Park, he's posted a 2.83 ERA and gone 7-2.

Three things to know about this game

• The Padres, off Thursday, will have a roster decision to make before Friday's game. Outfielder Travis Jankowski, out since late April with a broken right foot, will either be activated or optioned to Triple-A El Paso, as his rehab assignment will come to an end. While rehabbing with both of the Padres' Arizona Rookie League teams and El Paso, Jankowski has slashed .255/.388/.345 with four steals in five attempts.
"Travis is starting to pick it up offensively down there," Padres manager Andy Green said. "... Talking to [Triple-A manager Rod Barajas], he's flying around the bases again, he's slapping the ball around the yard. He's looking like Travis Jankowski."

• Having made four of his five starts on the road, Nova struggled in July, throwing to a 6.28 ERA. That said, he succeeded in getting batters to chase during the month. Among starting pitchers who threw at least 25 pitches out of the zone in the past 30 days, Nova's 58.8 chase percentage is the best in the Majors.

• According to Statcast, Wood allowed just a .128 expected batting average when he faced the Pirates in his last outing, the fourth-lowest mark in a game against Pittsburgh by any starter this season.

Note: I'll be camping up in Maine this weekend, so am setting up the threads with pitching matchups but no preview. I'm sure not too many care at this point, I know I don't, but just wanted to give a heads up.

You gotta hand it to Marte in the outfield.

Marte had an absolutely terrific catch early in the game. Very routine for him.

Our sole acquisition Benoit gave up another 7th inning lead-changing home run, his 2nd in 3 days, and then walked the bases loaded for the next guy.

But what the heck, the bats rose up and like you say, a win is a win!
