At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
DET: Matthew Boyd (5-5, 5.35 ERA)
PIT: Chad Kuhl (4-7, 4.53 ERA)

Quote:
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has enjoyed witnessing right-hander Chad Kuhl's progression this season. Kuhl's struggled at times during his first full season in Pittsburgh's rotation, but he's steadily improved in the past month. He can take another step in the right direction Tuesday when he opposes left-hander Matthew Boyd and the Tigers at PNC Park.

Kuhl pitched into the sixth inning just three times in his first 15 starts, but he turned things around in July, posting a 2.71 ERA in seven starts since the end of June. And he's coming off the best start, holding the Reds to four hits in seven scoreless innings Thursday.

"We're still moving the pieces around on who he is, giving him the opportunity to go out and create or watch him, through experience, create the guy who he can be," Hurdle said. "I don't think we've got our fingerprint on that yet. … There's been continuous growth from the beginning until now. I'm just enjoying the ride."

Boyd, meanwhile, had his streak of three straight quality starts snapped Thursday against the Orioles. He lasted only 4 1/3 innings after surrendering three runs on five hits.
Three things to know about this game

• Shortstop Jordy Mercer is expected to return to the Pirates' lineup after a scheduled off-day Monday. Mercer is hitting only .219/.284/.356 with two home runs in 21 games since the All-Star break.

• Boyd will be making just his second career start at a National League ballpark, giving him the rare opportunity to hit. He's hitless in two at-bats in the Majors.

• In his most recent start, Kuhl recorded an out in the seventh for the third time this season and completed the frame for the second time, all while maintaining his velocity. Kuhl's 96.6-mph average this season on fastballs thrown in the seventh inning or later ranks fourth among all pitchers who have thrown at least 10 of them that late in a game.

Head scratcher...
Mercer leads off the inning with a double. Cervelli, batting 8th, strikes out. Kuhn comes to the plate, and Hurdle has him bunt.
Why???

I think the odds/stats actually prove this out to be a smart play. Kuhl has just 3 career hits and 2 career walks. His OBP is less than .100. He strikes out almost half of his ABs. Chances are small he does something productive in this situation. And considering how many infield hits that Starling Marte gets, moving the runner to 3rd even with 2 outs has some merit.

Why is that a reach? Kuhl is batting .032.

It isn't a reach. Statistically it increases the odds of scoring. Marte has 112 career infield hits. That is 4.8% of his total ABs. Those are hits that won't score a man from second. Couple that with an unknown percentage of hits that are struck solidly enough and directly to an OF that also won't allow the runner to score from second. And factor in the remote chances of a wild pitch or a balk or some other freak occurrence that would only score a runner from 3rd and not from second. The point is those 90 feet have some value. And when an out is such a sure outcome as it is with Kuhl it makes sense to grab those 90 feet with a one out sacrifice.

I stand corrected.
And just for the record... I was just ribbing you with the " nice reach" comment.
