At Comerica Park
Game time: 1:10PM ET
Probable starters:
PIT: Gerrit Cole (9-8, 4.00 ERA)
DET: Drew VerHagen (0-1, 5.00 ERA)

Quote:
Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole will square off against Tigers righty Drew VerHagen when the clubs wrap up a four-game home-and-home Interleague series on Thursday at Comerica Park.

After a turbulent June, in which he allowed seven earned runs in three of his six starts, Cole has since tossed six straight quality starts. In his fifth season, Cole is a mentor to younger pitchers -- despite being just 26 years old. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle suggested that Cole's up and down June helped show other members on the pitching staff what it takes to work through adversity on the mound.

"He had a month of hard [times], where he got to do something hard," Hurdle said. "I think the young men got to watch him work through it, how he continued to prepare, how he continued to show up, how he continued to not let it leak into other areas. So he's modeled the kind of behavior you want to see out of a guy with experience and a high skill set."

VerHagen will make his third career start and second this season, after throwing five innings with two runs allowed in a no-decision against the Orioles on Saturday. He made three relief appearances in a span of four days against the Pirates last season, allowing seven hits and three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings.

Three things to know about this game

• After a disappointing June, in which he posted a 6.17 ERA, Cole has since rebounded with a 2.61 ERA in six starts. Part of his resurgence can be attributed to significantly cutting his hard-hit rate -- the rate of batted balls hit with an exit velocity of 95 mph or higher -- down from 34.7 percent from April through June to 25.7 percent since, which has been the game's seventh-lowest rate in that span.

• The sample size is tiny, but the Pirates have enjoyed success against VerHagen. The current roster is 7-for-11 (.636) with a 1.510 on-base plus slugging percentage.

• Since June 30, Cole has a 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings rate, with is higher than any full season mark of his career. In 2017 overall, he's striking out 8.1 batters per nine innings.

10 games left v St. Louis, 7 games left v the Cubs, and 3 games left v the Brewers.

If there was ever a time for Nova and Taillon to break out of their slumps, it's right now.
