At Rogers Centre
Game time: 7:07PM ET
Probable starters:
PIT: Jameson Taillon (6-5, 4.60 ERA)
TOR: Marcus Stroman (10-5, 3.17 ERA)

Quote:
Not since June 2011 have the Pirates and Blue Jays squared off at Rogers Centre, but they'll meet again Friday to open a three-game series, with Jameson Taillon on the mound for Pittsburgh against Toronto's Marcus Stroman.

Taillon had a bounceback outing in his most recent start, allowing two runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings against the Padres. In his three prior starts, he racked up a 14.25 ERA with 26 hits allowed in 12 innings.

Taillon, the second overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft, has never faced the Blue Jays, but he has a 1.93 ERA in five career Interleague starts.

Taillon is ranked among the league's best in limiting hard contact this season, tied for sixth in average exit velocity allowed (84.8 mph) among pitchers with at least 260 batted ball events, according to Statcast.

Stroman has seen the Pirates once, albeit briefly, in his Major League debut in 2014. In two-thirds of an inning as a reliever, he allowed a hit and a run while hitting a batter. Now, as a well-established arm in the Blue Jays' rotation, Stroman is looking to build off a string of success that includes a 2.24 ERA in his past eight starts.

Things to know about this game

• Despite his recent success since the end of June, Stroman has a walks-per-nine-innings rate of 3.96 in that span (52 1/3 innings), well above his 2.9 BB/9 season average. But he's only allowed one home run and a .320 slugging percentage in that time, preventing most of those walks from coming around to score.

• Each of the 11 hits the Astros collected against Stroman in his last start came off his two-seam fastball, a career high for the right-hander and the most against any pitcher's two-seamer/sinker in a game this season. However, just two of those 11 had an exit velocity of 95-plus mph, Statcast's threshold for hard-hit balls.

• The Pirates have made the most of their limited time with a designated hitter this season. Entering Thursday, four players had combined for a .381/.519/.476 slash line in six games.

Another win for the good guys.

Here's hoping Cutch isn't seriously injured. I tuned in late, so I missed the injury.

McCutchen (knee) said he felt "significantly better" after Friday's game and could play Saturday, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.
The team will decide Saturday whether he's fit to return to the lineup as a designated hitter or center fielder. "I'd like to play defense, too," he said. "I feel better now. Docs ran some tests. It was good. We'll see how it feels tomorrow." He described his pain as a cramp and said he didn't need an MRI, even as a precautionary measure. It appears fantasy owners dodged a major bullet Friday.
