At Miller Park
Game time: 7:40 PM ET
Probable starters:
PIT: Ivan Nova (10-9, 4.53 ERA)
TOR: Zach Davies (13-6, 4.40 ERA)

Quote:
Travis Shaw will hope to face his favorite opposing pitcher, while the Brewers' newest acquisition, Neil Walker, will face the team that drafted him, as Milwaukee begins a two-game set with the Pirates on Tuesday at Miller Park.

Right-hander Zach Davies will start for the Brewers, countering Pirates starter Ivan Nova. After a win on Sunday, the Brewers are two games back of the first-place Cubs, and the Pirates are four games back after a loss to the Blue Jays on Sunday.

Walker was traded to the Brewers on Saturday and immediately inserted into the lineup at third base on Sunday. The Pittsburgh native was drafted by the Pirates in 2004 and spent seven seasons with them before being traded to the Mets in 2016.

While with the Mets, Walker dominated Pittsburgh this season. He went 5-for-15 with two homers at PNC Park and 3-for-9 with a homer, triple and three walks at Citi Field.

"I asked [pitching coach Ray Searage] if we're going to adjust our pitching plan to him based on what we experienced in Pittsburgh," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "He swung the bat very well against us."

Shaw, who sat out of Sunday's game in a walking boot after he fouled two balls off his right leg on Saturday, has handled Nova well in his career. The Brewers' RBI leader is 10-for-13 with two doubles and three homers against the Pirates' right-hander. Brewers manager Craig Counsell said on Sunday that he expects Shaw to be in the lineup Tuesday.

Pittsburgh swept the Brewers in a four-game series the last time these teams met from July 17-20 in Pittsburgh. With 34 of the Pirates' next 38 games in the NL Central, they'll have a chance to make a push in the division.

"I think it's what everybody kind of hopes for when you go into the season," Hurdle said. "You can be playing meaningful games late. You're in your division. We all know what everybody else has got. There's no tricks or hidden players or anything that should come out and surprise you. The team that plays the best is going to win."

Three things to know about this game

• Davies is 1-1 with a 4.58 ERA in three starts against the Bucs this season. Most recently, he received no-decision against them, allowing one unearned run over seven innings in a 3-2 Brewers loss on July 19.

• The Pirates may need to make a roster move before Tuesday's game if right fielder Gregory Polanco (left hamstring) is unable to play, but Andrew McCutchen (left knee) is expected to return to center field after serving as the designated hitter in Sunday's series finale against the Blue Jays.

• Nova has struggled recently, allowing six runs on 10 hits in Detroit on Wednesday. He has a 6.67 ERA since the All-Star break with opponents slashing .355/.392/.628 against him during that span.
