At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
STL: Adam Wainwright (12-5, 4.87 ERA)
PIT: Jameson Taillon (7-5, 4.50 ERA)

Quote:
The Cardinals and Pirates will be jockeying for better position in a tight National League Central race during a four-game series that begins Thursday night at PNC Park and will conclude with a special showcase game in Williamsport, Pa. The two teams last met coming out of the All-Star break, with the Pirates taking two wins in that three-game series.

The opening game of this series will pit Pittsburgh's Jameson Taillon against Adam Wainwright, who is coming off a start in which he did not register a pitch over 90 mph or record a strikeout. Wainwright acknowledged afterward that he felt some stiffness on the outside of his pitching arm.

Though he skipped his normal between-starts bullpen session this week, Wainwright played flat-ground catch without issue on Tuesday and did not feel it necessary to push back the scheduled start. In 16 career appearances at PNC Park, he is 6-4 with a 5.23 ERA.

Taillon, who has allowed six earned runs in 11 innings vs. the Cardinals this season, will enter Thursday on the heels of consecutive quality starts. It's been a welcome bounceback for Taillon, who had allowed 17 earned runs over his two previous outings.

There is evidence, though, that Taillon has also fallen victim to some bad luck. According to Statcast, there is a 45-point gap between his .292 opponent batting average and .247 expected average, a figure based on the quality of contact against him, plus his actual strikeout numbers. That's the fourth-biggest gap among more than 100 pitchers with at least 350 opponent at-bats in 2017.

Things to know about this game

• Pittsburgh is expected to have catcher Francisco Cervelli back in the lineup for the opener. Cervelli was given three consecutive days off in an attempt to heal an injury to his left wrist and hand.

• Of the final 42 games on the Cardinals' schedule, 28 will be against division opponents. And of the five teams in the NL Central, the Cardinals have the worst winning percentage (.417) in intradivision games. The Cardinals are 5-4 against Pittsburgh this season and have narrowly outscored the Pirates, 29-27, in those games.

• The first three games of the series will be held at PNC Park before the two teams will travel to Williamsport, Pa., to play Sunday night's game on ESPN at Bowman Field near the Little League World Series Complex. It will be the first Major League game ever played in the city.
