At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
STL: Carlos Martinez (9-9, 3.56 ERA)
PIT: Trevor Williams (5-5, 4.19 ERA)

Quote:
The Cardinals and Pirates will continue jostling for improved positioning in the National League Central on Friday, when they meet at PNC Park for the second game of a four-game series.

After winning the opener, the Cardinals snapped their three-game losing streak and pulled within 1 1/2 games of the National League Central-leading Cubs. The Pirates lost their fifth straight, falling five games under .500 and 5 1/2 back in the division race.

St. Louis will likely know early what sort of night is ahead for All-Star right-hander Carlos Martinez, who has had most of his recent trouble in the first inning. Opponents have an OPS of .902 against Martinez in the opening frame, and his ERA (6.75) and runs allowed (18) are higher in that inning than any other. Ten of the runs Martinez has given up in the first have come via home run.

This will be Martinez's second start of the season against the Pirates, who earned a walk-off victory in his July 16 start at PNC Park. In 10 career starts (19 appearances) versus Pittsburgh, Martinez is 4-5 with a 3.50 ERA.

He'll be opposed on Friday by Trevor Williams, who is coming off an unusual outing in Toronto in which he walked a season-high four and struck out seven. Williams gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits, but still finished six innings.

Since his first start of the season against Los Angeles, Williams has steadied en route to posting a 3.62 ERA in 17 starts. During that stretch, he's held opponents to a .243/.305/.354 slash line.

Williams made his Major League debut in relief against the Cardinals last season, pitching three innings and earning his first big league win Sept. 7 at PNC Park. He started against the Cards at PNC Park on July 16 and allowed two runs (one earned) on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings, settling for a no-decision in the Pirates' 4-3 win.

Things to know about this game

• With Francisco Cervelli (left wrist inflammation) on the disabled list, the Pirates may turn to catcher Elias Diaz on Friday. Veteran catcher Chris Stewart started behind the plate in each of Pittsburgh's past three games. Diaz appeared to find his swing in Triple-A Indianapolis, batting .333 with a .780 OPS over his final 13 games.

• The Cardinals will continue this series without a designated closer now that Trevor Rosenthal has landed on the disabled list with right posterior elbow irritation. Right-hander Seung Hwan Oh and left-hander Tyler Lyons are most likely to be summoned should the Cardinals have a save situation.

• Martinez has been much more effective against right-handed batters than lefties this year. In righty-righty matchups (minimum 200 at-bats), his .195 expected batting average allowed -- based on quality of contact and his actual strikeout numbers -- trails only Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom.

So to be hired as a base coach for the Pirates is it essential that you be a total fucking moron?

The transitive property of equality says that if A=B, and B=C, then A=C. What we know as of now is that:
A = Nutting's main hiring criteria is to
B = Hire cheap labor. Cheap labor exists because
C = It doesn't require fair compensation (which is moronic) OR it is unqualified to do the job for which it is hired (moronic)

So yeah, I believe it is essential, at least indirectly, for a Pirates base coach to be a total moron.

On a related note, Nutting wants to gin up attendance for the next home stand. He plans a moron promotion, knowing that you must be a total moron if you'd pay for a ticket to watch any remaining game the rest of this season -- which would ironically qualify you to coach 1B or 3B. So, every inning TWO seat numbers will get randomly drawn. These two winners (morons) will get to coach 1B or 3B for that inning, after which they will get to have ice water dumped over their heads by the Pirate player of their choice.

Excellent. 8-)

Not directed at any particular poster, but here's something to ponder.

Let's say you attend 2 Pirate games per month, or maybe 12 over the entire season.
Let's assume your average cost, all in (tickets, food, parking, gas, souvenirs), is $200 per game.
That is $2,400 per year in after-tax entertainment money.
That is $4,000 or more, given your tax bracket, to gross enough to clear or net $2,400.

So, if you gross $100/hour, you work 40 hours per year for Bob Nutting. If you gross $50/hour, you work 2 weeks per year for the Nut.
If you gross $25/hour you work a month for the Nut.

Some will say they only attend 6 games a season or spend less money than $200. Fine. Just cut my numbers in half and you still must work one week if you make $50/hour to pay the Nut, or two weeks if you make $25/hour to pay the Nut. Who's really the Nut in all this?
