At Wrigley Field
Game time: 8:05 PM ET
Probable starters:
PIT: Trevor Williams (5-6 4.40 ERA)
CHC: Mike Montgomery (4-6, 3.43 ERA)

Quote:
Trevor Williams and Mike Montgomery each began their season in the bullpen, but have stepped into the rotation and, for the most part, stepped up when their teams needed them. They'll take the mound opposite each other Monday night as the Pirates and Cubs begin a three-game series at Wrigley Field.

Below .500 and far behind the National League Central-leading Cubs, the Pirates could use a series victory to prop up any hopes of a September push toward contention. While it's unlikely the Pirates will catch the Cubs, Chicago must keep the Bucs at bay to hold off closer competition like the Brewers and Cardinals.

The Pirates will send Williams to the mound after the best start of his young career. On the other side of Rich Hill's nine-inning no-hit bid, Williams fired eight scoreless innings and kept the game close enough for Josh Harrison to hit a walk-off homer in the 10th inning. Williams, a long reliever on the Pirates' Opening Day roster, has recorded a 3.92 ERA over his last 19 starts.

Montgomery will make his second consecutive start in place of the injured Jon Lester. After tossing 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief following Lester's last start, Montgomery spun six shutout innings against the Reds on Wednesday. The lefty allowed only four hits and struck out four in his ninth start. He is 2-0 with only one run allowed in 12 innings over his last two starts.

Three things to know about this game

• Williams has made a pair of starts against the Cubs this season, both losses for the Pirates. He allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings, needing 98 pitches to record 11 outs, on July 7.

• The Cubs will play 24 of their final 33 games against NL Central competition. They are 30-22 within the division, the best intradivisional record in the Central.

• Andrew McCutchen is four hits shy of Dick Groat (1,435) for 14th place on the Pirates' all-time hit list and two homers short of 200.
