That they agreed to as part of buying out his contract in 1999.

Every year I see this, and every year I laugh my ass off about it.

Good for him! Maybe the 2nd best deal in sports after the "NBA TV Rights forever" deal by the Spirits of St. Louis in '76! Lol!

In retrospect, though, Bobby should have taken his lump sum payout. He sacrificed a potential $10 M in earnings by taking the annuity.

I only laugh my ass off because the Mets invested terribly with the whole Madoff deal. Had they been smarter, they would have made money on the Bonilla deal.

The Spirits of St. Louis deal was just stupid, though, because what the NBA gave up in order to pay a lesser sum showed an appalling lack of vision on the part of the NBA.

It's almost like the NBA a) never envisioned things like cable TV and b) didn't expect to get any more popular?
