If you were a real fan of Metallica, you had a sinking feeling when you first saw the Enter Sandman video. Yes, the Black album sucked. Everything they have released since the Black album has sucked. No, Death Magnetic was not good. It also sucked.

Now, Hetfield's voice is gone. Whatever, he's old. However, the new single gives a glimmer of hope that the new album will be good. Hetfield is back to his teenage angsty paranoia lyrics. The riffs are nicely machine gun old school thrash. I'm not holding out much hope, however.

The least Lars Ulrich could do for us is remaster And Justice for All so that you can actually hear what the hell Jason Newstand (sp.?) is playing.

I consider myself a 'real' fan. Been listening to them since the mid 80's. Agreed about 'The Black' album. For crying out loud they let Bob Rock use keyboards on that album. Definitely a turning point in the bands direction.
You might think 'Death Magnetic' sucked but there are a few excellent songs on that disc. I also believe that the solo towards the end of 'Suicide and Redemption' is one of Hammett's best.

Thing is for me, even though they weren't putting out great studio albums after the late 80's their live shows never failed to impress. I have seen them probably 50 times over nearly 2 decades and only once would I say they were bad and that was in a huge stadium where there were technical difficulties throughout their set.
Two of the best shows I witnessed were Woodstock 99' when they played nearly 4 hours and at the Electric Factory in Philly when they did the 'Garage, inc' live.

Agree on the live performances. I was always amazed and delighted at how long their sets were. caught the Justice and Black tours.

I don't begrudge them changing their sound. What musician wants to play the same exact stuff for 30 years. But man, And Justic For All was the high water mark for me. Last lp that was consistently good start to finish.

"Hard Wired For Self Destruction" is the album prep single.

Yep, that's what it was. It was solid. Those guys were a great interview as well.

I consider myself a real fan. Been my favorite band since 86 when I was 12 and ordered the first 3 albums from Columbia House. Seen them probably 25 times, went AWOL from the USCG a couple times to do it. Personally I loved much of their direction in the 90's, even though I was a die hard 80's thrash fan. I love parts of the black album, and as far as guitar/drum sounds it's sonically the biggest sounding rock album ever. Cut the filler tracks off Load/Reload, put together the good tracks and it's IMO one of their best albums ever. Those two albums were some of Kirk's best and most tasteful solo work. Those 90's albums were perfect for what Metallica had become, the world's biggest arena/stadium heavy rock band. Where Bob Rock lost me was St. Anger, but there are a few hidden gems on there. And I like much of Death Magnetic.

I get bored of Justice. I can understand the guys' wanting to get the hell away from playing those long ass songs every night on tour. They've said many times their audiences looked bored about 5 minutes into those songs in the late 80's.

I wasn't blown away by the Hardwired single. But this new single Moth to Flame is awesome.

James' voice actually sounded pretty good at the pre-Super Bowl show in San Fran. Was pleasantly surprised. Kirk kinda sucks now though. You can tell he doesn't pick up the guitar aside from rehearsal or to play a show. He can't create a solo with any direction any more, one that builds to a musical crescendo.......and that was his strength on the 90's stuff.

Either way, i'm extremely grateful I got to see this band in their prime years when they were gods. They even blew Gn'R off the stage with a stand-in guitar player on the Guns/Metallica tour on '92.

Check out the Moth into Flame single that came out today. I think you'll like it if you liked Hardwired.

Ordering the first three albums from Columbia House shows your age. My dad got one of those subscriptions.

Hey now! I'm only 41. :D

I miss my tape collection. I still have one single cassette tape. Motley Crue "shout at the devil". Still sounds great. Better than the remastered cd.

I threw away literally hundreds of Grateful Dead live tapes when I discovered archive.org a few years back. There are probably some still kicking around the family home somewhere, though. I'm pretty sure I had And Justice For All on the tape, too. Ah, to be ten again lol. Something about having to physically rewind it that builds anticipation.

Archive.org is a wonderful site. I saw quite a few Dead shows on the west coast in the early 90's up until Jerry died. A couple of JGB shows as well. Amazing times and experiences. I think Shoreline Amphitheater was my favorite venue to see them. The Vegas shows were fun too.

Listening to Moth to Flame, now. Sounds like they are back down to business. I don't see why Lars insists on wearing that dumb ass do-rag, though. We know you're going bald and we don't care. Many of us are, too. But we do not wear do-rags. Then again, we are not in thrash bands.

Robert Trujillo is a mongoloid on that bass. I still remember learning how to play his intro to Punk It Up in high school. It was the first slap bass lick I mastered. I thought I was the shit and was extremely confused that ability to play it did not get me laid.

Or drummer.

So true...bass always comes last. :(

I even threw down "Eddie Was a Race Car Driver" by Primus (not nearly as hard to play as you might think) at the high school talent show with the band I was in. Not even that got me to the promise land! Alas, I was a nerdy little sod.

Edit: Jerry Was a Race whatever. It's been a while.

Meh...

They derailed their sound after Justice and never got back to it. I had hope that after Black (album) they'd return to what made them exceptional. They lost their groove IMO. I can't listen to anything they've made past Justice for All. Now if they got back to that groove they had like from Kill'em All to Ride the Lightning to Master of Puppets... Good Lord look out. I'll be the first in line. Not the same Metallica I grew up following.

Personally, I feel that by the time Justice came and went the whole progressive thrash thing had gone about as far as it was going to before it started sounding like a rehash. Megadeth had one more high water mark with the Rust in Peace album but that was pretty much it for that scene. I tend to think that a musician gets bored of playing/writing that type of music exclusively. You get older and your tastes change. I feel like artists who pigeonhole themselves into a narrow niche of music aren't challenging themselves.....and then they stagnate. I look at a band like Slayer or Iced Earth and i'm glad Metallica never went that route after the 80's.

Wish I had made it to the West Coast for the Dead. Saw my only shows on their last tour. I was 12 lol. Gotta love permissive, musically and socially liberal parents.

At least you got to see them. That's the important thing. I've found that it's pointless to try and describe the experience of a Grateful Dead show to somebody who never made it to one. So at least you got to taste the experience, the Dead were all about the live experience.

It's absolutely true. Shoreline, though. Saw Phish there and at Red Rocks, and I honestly can't make up my mind which is the more beautiful venue. The Gorge in WA doesn't suck, either.

Fair Point Cap. I'm happily stuck in the 80's and 90's when it comes to Metal. Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction (circa 1992) album was IMO their best album. Many good tunes from the start of side A through the last jam on side B. Slayers Season's in the Abyss (circa 1990) didn't fall off like Metallica's Black album (circa 1991) did. In fact Slayer sounds the same now as they did in the 80'/90's. About the time Metallica started to fall off their self appointed thrones Pantera entered the scene and Brought Back that Great Heavy Thrash Crunch and Sick Double Bass sound. Metallica Sold Out IMO. Went soft. The new stuff Lit put up sounds meh... like wanna-be cover band crap from a band emulating Old School Metallica. Again, My Opinion. Give Me Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth over Metallica.
