Always trust Swiss to skirt the political taboo here by making it "Steeler-related." What will inevitably happen, and already has given the few posts here, is posters injecting their own political preferences. Then, a war even though the board rules state absolutely no politics. SMH

Let's speed this along.

Clinton is so corrupt and a liar. How could anyone vote for her?

Trump is wholly unprepared to do, well, anything presidential and is a racist. Can you imagine Trump handling sensitive global issues? My God. How could anyone vote for him?

A vote for a third party is a wasted vote and you are a hippie if you think it matters. How could anyone vote for one?

Good summary knife. Where is the Steeler connection with Mr. Balsack?

Thanks for asking, RS. Despite Obviously's feeble attempt to attribute intent to my posting, I was hoping to spark a discussion on Tom Vilsack's Steeler fandom, not one on politics. I posted a similar comment on John Kasich a few months back, prior to voting for Kasich in thee New Hampshire primary.

Anyway, Vilsack is a Pittsburgh native, who spent his first few months of life in a Pittsburgh orphanage. On my desk remains a 2007 article from Pittsburgh Quarterly, which comes up with a Google search, but doesn't seem to be available any longer. The article is entitled From Pittsburgh to President, written when Vilsack briefly tossed his hat into the ring, seeking the 2008 Democratic nomination.

Vilsack was the keynote speaker for my agency's Annual Meeting in 2007. I gave him a framed print of a Steeler (might have been of Clark Haggens) as a gift. Following the meeting, I drove him and his wife to his destination in Concord, NH. Vilsack told me about being invited by the Governor of Minnesota (while Vilsack was Iowa gov) to attend a Steelers-Vikings game in Minnesota in '05. The Minnie gov (might have been Jesse Ventura) assumed that his guest, not knowing his roots, would root for the Vikes. They're down on the field before the game, and Vilsack wants to meet Hines, didn't hold back his Steeler fandom.

Vilsack attended St. Philomena's School in Squirrel Hill, graduated from Shady Side Academy. Here's a good quote from the P-Quarterly piece.

"Pittsburgh had an impact on that. When you're 9 years old and you listen to your team's baseball games on the radio, dreaming that some day, you, too, could play - bouncing a rubber ball off a brick wall, making fantastic catches in your back yard that no one else could see but you.

When your team goes up against what is considered to be one of the greatest baseball teams of all time and wins dramatically in the 9th inning of the7th game with a home run - you grow up thinking that the impossible is indeed possible. And if there was one lesson that the City of Pittsburgh taught me when I was growing up, it was that. Not only was it sports teams, but it was also the Renaissance that was taking place when I was a youngster, changing it from a dirty, gloomy place to a place of vibrancy and activity. I've always been proud of my Pittsburgh roots."

I can tell you this, having spent a few hours with Tom Vilsack. He is a regular Pittsburgh guy.

If he can do anything to get PIT into the SB, then I finally have a reason to vote for one of the candidates

No, he can't.

So don't.

Please.

Edit: sorry to be an old fuddy duddy, but the stakes are higher than ever, and I can't bear to take the implications lightly.

I'm folding either one of these hands. Gotta have a sense of humor about it - we're going to need it.

When I drove Vilsack to Concord in May '07, he was out of the race and was one of Hillary's national co-chairs. I remember him telling me then that the country, in his estimatio, simply wasn't ready for a guy by the name of Barack Obama to be elected president....that it was hardly ready for a woman to occupy that office.

Again, really good guy, really easy to talk to.

Oh, and his keynote speech was great!! All of our youth were there. He talked about being born into an orphanage, the pain of having an alcoholic adoptive mother, battling to succeed, etc......very inspiring for the kids.

I'm confused, what was the "battling to succeed" part of the speech referring to?

He better check with his potential running mates history and his party's overall platform before continuing to spew such nonsense......

Dude, the general board is proof enough that if there's any kind of political taboo here it's not being enforced. At all.

I'm talking about his speech to a group of at-risk kids, SuperK, wherein he referenced his growing up with an alcoholic parent....something alot of those kids are forced to confront.

I understand the circumstances but am still (possibly more) confused. No matter who the audience is your message should be fundamentally consistent. Pandering if not pure hypocrisy.

What constitutes an at risk child these days? Are there kids without risk? I used to like going to friends houses with boozy parents, they cracked me up. Hard to believe she could have been that bad going thru the trouble to adopt in 1951?!?

On a more serious note, it needs to be emphasized that he is in no way, shape, or form a "regular Pittsburgh guy". These career politicians and career politicians for a reason.

In this case, the "at-risk" kids were youth adjudicated as abused/neglected, delinquent or as status offenders by the State of New Hampshire's child-protective and juvenile justice agency, all in out-of-home placement.

As far as Vilsack goes, good to have your assessment of a guy you've likely never met. I spent a fair amount of time with him and his wife over the course of an evening, felt like I got to know him a little bit.

Stupid rule anyways - should be able to discuss in general discussion, have no idea why that's a problem.

Trump not a politician is the point. How's that been working for us? Racist lol - he wants to keep illegals out and he is a racist. Ha.

It’s because Vilsack, in his own mind, remains a son of the place of his birth and upbringing ― Pittsburgh. He maintains close ties there, and is a typically impassioned member of the Pittsburgh diaspora of emigrants created by the collapse of the local steel-based economy in the 1970s.

An orphan who was left almost literally on the doorstep of the Sister of Charity’s Roselia Founding Home in 1950, Vilsack was educated in local schools and steeped in Pittsburgh culture before leaving the city for good after graduating from Hamilton College.

A Roman Catholic whose father was of Eastern European stock ― the staple of working-class white Pittsburgh ― Vilsack grew up an ardent fan of the Pirates and the Steelers and remains focused on them with the kind of emotion and obsessive detail that only the locals fully understand and appreciate.

As a fellow Pittsburgher, I know all this: Vilsack and I talk Steelers all the time.

Tim Kaine, D-VA. Originally from St. Paul so a Vikings fan? Or if he's been in VA for a period of time, a Redskins fan? The only thing I could find about his fandom is this:

Sorry the Pittsburgh guy didn't work out, Swiss.
