It's so dumb! How is suspending guys for smoking pot protecting the image of the shield? Bah, it's so stupid. The product the NFL puts out this year will be worse because Gordon won't be on the field. THAT is tarnishing the shield in my eyes.

Averaged 19 yards a catch last season. I cannot even comprehend that.

Good for the Steelers, but the League fucking sucks and is stupid. Ray Rice is laughing in between wife beatings...

Wallace averaged 21.0 in 2010 :D

I think it's kind of dumb to have a separate policy for rec drugs - just let law enforcement deal with that.

Otherwise Josh Gordon is why PIT would take action with Bell & Blount...It's not so much that you care what they did but that you need the message to be received so they don't end-up getting suspended for a year at some point. Not to mention it's never acceptable to be drunk/stoned at an organized team activity, even if it's just a short flight.

If Josh Gordon was an owner instead of a player, he'd be in the clear.

I hate the personal conduct arbitrary bullshit.

But I think the disconnect here is that many don't understand substance abuse. I do understand that this situation could likely exist exclusively for Marijuana...but for Gordon that isn't the case as he has also failed for opiates. Most of these guys are poly addicted and have problems with alcohol and other substances. And if guys blowing a third and fourth test for weed with this type of money on the line...it's really quite amazing that some haven't rethought there position that weed is entirely harmless. Anything that can enhance baser pleasures like food and sex to the degree weed does...add to that the lack of toxicity and no hang over price...it's abuse potential is huge. God knows I've been abusing it for nearly 30 years...

I did think he had a chance of getting off...it seems the NFLPA signed off on an amount of weed in the system positive that very well could be second hand smoke...and Gordons levels were low enough that if the samples would have been tested in a different order there would have been no positive...but dating back to college it's like his fifth offense.

Its stupid. Gordon gets no unfair advantage.

Yep, some guys just don't get it. Gordon has a long list of substance arrests and suspensions going back through several colleges and his brief NFL career. He was so dumb as to get clanged for another issue with one hanging over his head. Then to top it off, his statement today pretty much pushed the blame on the league and it's system. Right! Second hand smoke!
One would hope that a one season ban would not only wake him up, but also grow him up. This clown is taking "boneheaded" to the next level!

He could have punched seven women in the face and still got two games in this year.

Honestly, I think the stance is they fear a string of DUI busts if they exclude marijuana. They seem to have enough now with the penalties in place that the fear isn't unjustified.

And the other issue is players getting stoned 24/7. The NBA and MLB don't have complicated systems and playbooks to learn, nor the NHL. That fear may not be unjustified, but NFL teams probably feel the league policy is policing it sufficiently and it's not something they want to take on themselves (i.e. if it isn't broke, don't fix it).

In other words, the teams/NFL think the policy helps a significant number of players exercise self-control (which players like Bell/Holmes/Blount/Gordon clearly lack).

What do you really expect he hundred league in a substance-abuse program and was suspended for two games last year. Now he got his third and fourth violation getting busted for weed and on the DUI they had to take that into account

Dude needs to get his life together. If Blount and Bell are morons for screwing their teammates before a preseason game, where do you put Gordon on the IQ spectrum. With their QB and WR situation outside of him, he's damn near torpedoed their season. The mood in that locker room must be somber, to say the least.

He def has a track record. But I really think the reason the NFL takes such a hard stance on weed is because it's still a Schedule 1 CSA drug and the NFL gets such preferential treatment from the Feds that the NFL is asked, behind the scenes, to model their policy accordingly.

I'll take my tinfoil hat off now.

I'm of the opinion that some of you mix up 'it should be legal and not against NFL policy' to smoke dope.. ....with... ...it could cost a player A LOT OF MONEY, hurt the team, the owners, and the fans.

I have no problem with those that enjoy pot...but I do wonder about those that are willing to risk so much for so little (even if it 'should' be legal) enjoyment.

The Players' Association really screwed the pooch by leaving the drug policy unchanged and letting Goodell make up personal conduct policy discipline on the fly.

Smoke pot = lose your career

Beat women = who gives a fuck?

Exactly the message the NFL has decided is palatable to their market. Probably correctly, but I don't think it says very good things about us as fans.

The whole beat women vs weed stuff is just horse shit.

Fact is according to the cops and the emt's nothing. Not a bruise, no concussion symptoms, nothing...blood alcohol might have been nice.

This whole narrative disgusts me. Women aren't always right. They sometimes lie. They sometimes put on an act. NFL players commit domestic violence at half the rate of the population at large. Rice faced the same justice you or I would and was fined 500k.

She has been with him for years and chose to marry him after the incident. There is video of him dragging an "apparently" unconscious woman out of an elevator and nothing more. I don't believe for a second she was KOed...and I think 500k is excessive.

I'm going to try to dance around a delicate topic, but if you do any digging into the ownership of all 32 teams, one can understand why "drugs" is more important to keep under control than domestic violence. Or at least be more punitive towards recreational drug use. Wife beating doesn't happen nearly as often as firing up a spliff. Drug use is just morally corrupt, where as slapping your wife around is just "anger management."

Think Nancy Reagan and "the war on drugs."

If he had been picked up with a DUI for drinking too much the punishment would have been the same. It can not be all that hard to avoid doing things that your contract says you can not do. Any DUI is flat out stupid for these men. Hire a driver. Call a cab.
