They are like those random Japanese soldiers who combed the jungles of the Philippines and kept fighting World War II years after Japan’s formal surrender in 1945.

They are the Deflategate Truthers and they got some new energy in recent days when Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported that the Giants sent a couple of suspiciously deflated footballs to the NFL office after losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers Dec. 4 at Heinz Field.

The report was shot down swiftly by the league office with this statement: “The officiating game ball procedures were followed and there were no chain of command issues. All footballs were in compliance and no formal complaint was filed by the Giants with our office.’’

That, naturally, did not cut it with the Deflategate Truthers. The Patriots Media Cartel swung into action and apologies are being demanded once again. Jonathan Kraft took his message to the airwaves on the Patriots’ in-house pregame show Monday night.

“I haven’t followed it that closely,’’ Kraft started . . .

Wow. That was a whopper right there. Nobody follows Deflategate more closely than the Patriots team president and this was obvious throughout Monday’s interview when he cited underinflation numbers and temperatures at Heinz Field on the day in question. It should also be noted that before Kraft went on the radio, yet another pro-Patriot column from the Washington Post already had been posted on Jonathan’s in-house Truther newsletter, “The Wells Report In Context.”

After telling us he hadn’t followed the story that closely, Kraft launched into a message about the league learning from its mistake and said, “I think the league now has learned what the ideal gas law is.’’ Kraft kept saying he would leave his personal feelings out of it, then came back to “under oath, the league admitted they didn’t know what the ideal gas law was . . . I’m glad the league has learned, that’s the one plus out of it . . .’’

Kraft was asked, “But has the league learned? Because their statement said there were no chain of custody issues.’’

Kraft responded, “I don’t even know what that means so I can’t opine on it. I don’t know what that means.’’

Wow. The polygraph would have exploded on that one.

“I would interpret that as the league calling out the Patriots,’’ suggested pregame host Marc Bertrand of The Sports Hub.

Bingo, Beetle. When the league cites “no chain of command issues” and Kraft is asked about “no chain of custody issues,’’ everybody knows exactly what it means. It means the league believes the Patriots had an ongoing scheme of tampering with the game balls after the balls were inspected before the games. It means the Patriots never explained why Jimmy McNally disappeared into the men’s room with a bag of footballs that had been inspected. It means the Patriots never explained why Jimmy was known as “The Deflator.” It means the Patriots never explained why McNally and John Jastremski lost their jobs and have never spoken to the media. And let’s not touch the third rail that is Tom Brady’s perfectly timed cellphone destruction.

The science has never mattered. It was the non-compliance. The coverup. The intransigence. The “deny-deny-accuse” strategy.

Has Jonathan tried to blame the Russian hackers yet?

I’ve said it a million times. The Patriots don’t win football games because they video coaches’ sideline signals or take a little air out of footballs or put Scott Zolak in the visitors’ headsets. They win because they are better than you and smarter than you and they almost never choke in the big moment. But they do stuff. Like everybody else. Unfortunately, they also have been caught doing stuff. With one prior on record (Spygate), and a raft of jealous opponents demanding sanctions, the Patriots could not let this one get traced back to Bill Belichick. So the Patriots were too harshly punished for a small transgression. Brady paid the highest price.

But it’s over. One million bucks, first- and-fourth-round picks, and Brady’s four games are not walking through that door. Stop with the demands for an apology. Stop with The Wells Report In Context. Point the Media Cartel in another direction. Honor the terms of Deflategate surrender.

THEY WERE DOING IT.

And it’s OK. They were driving 68 in a 65 miles-per-hour zone like we all do. But instead of admitting it and accepting a warning they spit in the face of the cops and insisted the radar gun was broken.

Time to just let it go and stop talking about the godforsaken ideal gas law.

Put down your weapons. Come home from those jungles. The Deflategate war is over. And you lost.

Awesome post mortem to remind the asshat truthers

Just wait until Portnoy starts his barstool channel on Sirius Jan1

Bet his first guest is whiny Jonathan.

It was always about the balls going missing and the cover up

But they can't absorb the truth

Perfectly summed up. He's right that Ne probably doesn't need to do this shit to win games but they do it to ensure things go according to their plans.
And as Nixon found out, the cover up is worse than the crime

Swiss, it must truly be an interesting experience up there amongst the Chowds. I thought that was something dude made up just for the column when I posted. The fact that they actually, by that appellation, exist? Priceless.

Local sports talk radio is utterly intolerable.
As much as other fanbases look at us as entitled, we've got absolutely nothing over these nimrods of the northeast.
