This year the committee will face one of the most difficult and telling decisions yet - What do you do with an Ohio St. team that is ranked #2 in the country, yet didn't win it's own division, yet alone league.

There are 2 schools of thought

1) Playoff is intended for the 4 "best" teams
2) Playoff is intended for the 4 "most deserving" teams.

I'm squarely in the #2 camp. Most deserving is the right way to look at it, as it puts more value to objective factors and less on subjective ones (such as eye test and rankings). I value conference championships very highly.

My final four assuming everyone wins out

1) Alabama
2) Clemson
3) UW
4) Big 10 title game winner

Next in
5) Oklahoma (If they win)
6) Ohio St.

I agree with you on this one, Lifelong!!

And....in the spirit of transparency, I'm a Lifelong (no pun intended) Nittany Lion fan (though not in the same orbit as my Steeler fandom).

I don't know how a #2 beats a #3, falls to #5 and misses a four team playoff.

Ohio St. got stabbed in the back enough today, let's not pile on.

Simple...by not winning the conference championship, and losing to the team that did. Decide on the field, not via a vote.

There is no way Washington is better than OSU. Or Michigan and two other Big Ten teams.

By that logic, Western Michigan is in the Final Four.

BTW WMU vs. Michigan would be kind of cool.

negative ......OSU is in by any approach. And actually in an advantageous position. Not having to play the extra game could be big. Last year in the second half of Natty both Bama and Clemson were GASSED.

OSU in. Bama in. Clemson needs to win ACC.

Wash wins and in. Wisconsin wins and I think in if Wash loses. PSU I think actually gets hosed if wins and Wash loses. Committee will talk themselves into putting Michigan in with head to head drubbing of PSU......

Actually, the committee is going by objective rankings and not just the eye test. Here's what they're looking at (assuming Penn State wins)

Ohio State (11-1):

3-1 vs. Top 10 (W at No. 7 Oklahoma, W at No. 6 Wisconsin, L at No. 8 Penn State, W vs. No. 5 Michigan)
4-1 vs. Top 25 (W vs. No. 23 Nebraska)
8-1 vs. .500 or better.

Penn State (11-2):

2-1 vs. Top 10 (L at No. 5 Michigan, W vs. No. 2 Ohio State, W vs. No. 6 Wisconsin)
3-2 vs. Top 25 (L at No. 24 Pitt, W vs. No. 22 Iowa)
7-2 vs. .500 or better

More quality wins objectively, as well as one less overall loss despite playing a better non-conference schedule. If Penn State had beat Pitt, you'd have a much better argument. It would be slightly better schedule vs conference champion. But that extra loss kills Penn State.

Oh, I think they will get in. Because this is probably going to be a popularity contest not an earned athletic competition. Power 5 conference winners earn their spot by winning their conference. No reason to make it more complicated than that.

Otherwise why even have a conference?

FWIW this is how Ohio St. jumped Baylor/TCU a couple years ago, so . . .

Most deserving? How about Western Michigan?

This is about the most homeriffic thread on here this fall.

I will smile with quiet satisfaction if the Pitt loss keeps PSU out of the dance, of course, but hey, PSU fans, look at the bright side, if you're left out, you get to spend all off season with that "coulda been a contender" swag. In at #4, you get to lick wounds from a 45 point drubbing by Saban and the boys.

Maybe you're better off. Good season, though, PA silver medalists.

Also, by the way, you're overlooking a pretty damn good Wisconsin team.
