I'm pretty bulled up on him this year. I think he puts together a solid year in this offense. We don't need stars everywhere on the field to win the Super Bowl...we need to mix in some role players.

Nice read.

Hope James can step up in the RZ this year.

He doesnt fit what the Steelers do with the tight ends.

I knew there was no chance the Steelers would draft a tight end...The Steelers value the long snapper more than the TE.

I am not saying its my opinion or what I want.

The Steelers with Todd Haley as the OC and Mike Tomlin as the HC will never value the posiiton

Barnidge will be 32 years old, was just cut by the worst team in the league, and hasn't generated more than passing interest from any NFL team. He's not the answer at TE.

The Browns aren't close to the worst team in the league.

NYJets
Jacksonville
LA Rams
Chicago Bears

For sure, and maybe another 5 teams beyond that.

Besides, you can look at it the other way: in past two years with crappy QB, he put up:
134 catches for 1655, 11TD

All of the steelers TEs the past two years put up:
145 catches for 1441, 9TD

Goddamn can we get Heath out of retirement?

James has talent but he plays small. He needs to play big.

They still finished 1-15 last year and had boatloads of cap space. I'll call them the worst until they show otherwise. Besides, the Browns have hot garbage at Tight End. Their top 2 on the depth chart are Randall Telfer and Seth DeValve. Njoku has shown nothing so far.

In his 6 seasons prior to 2015, Barnidge put up 44 catches for 603 yards, 2 TDs. I'm more inclined to look at 2015 as a fluke.

James doesn't really impress me much, to be honest. He's slow and doesn't move with the fluidity you'd expect to see out of a primarily pass-catching TE. I personally think his ceiling is to be just an average TE that bounces around the league, unless they do the Matt Spaeth thing where they hang onto a marginal player seemingly forever because he knows the system. (No, that's not a direct comparison to Matt Spaeth, as I know some moron is going to throw up their stats and yell "JAMES IS BETTER" over and over again).

I think his blocking is very subpar, which would be fine if he were a big matchup problem. But even after 2 full seasons of starting, he hasn't shown me that capability with enough consistency to think he can be counted on to be that matchup problem.

But with the other weapons we have, an average tight end may very well be enough. Prefer to see an upgrade there, but if he's the only weak spot of our offense, then we're in pretty good shape.

I'm a JJ defender as I believe that he will get much better.

Remember, he is very young. He just turned 23 in June. He is 2 months older than Trubisky, 2 months younger than Rueben Foster (1st round pick of the 9ers) and 4 months older than TJ Watt. Those are all 1st round picks from this year.

He has 2 NFL seasons under his belt too.

I think/hope that this is the year he takes a big step.

My problem with Jesse James is that he needs to develop a mean streak and run with anger. I have said this in other threads but he runs like a pussy with the ball in his hands, so tentative, like he is afraid of getting hurt. With his size and length and decent speed, he did run a 4.66, 4.71 at his Pro Day, he should be able to pick up more yards after the catch. When they throw the ball to him, I am resigned to the fact that there will be no RAC yardage, he will make the catch and then be easily tackled.

In terms of the Steelers as an organization not valuing TEs I don't see that at all. Benny Cunningham, Eric Green, Mark Bruner, and Heath Miller were all 1st round picks. They also drafted their fair share in round 3, 4, 5, be it Matt Spaeth, Adrian Cooper, Brent Jones, Jerame Tuman, Jesse James. They went after free agents like Mike Mularkey and Ladarius Green. This past draft there was a run on TEs just like CBs and Ss so early that there was nothing left in the cupboard by the time of our 3rd round picks. It happens.

I think they will draft a TE high in the next draft maybe 2nd or 3rd round if they see a player they like.
