Does anyone have the details on why James Harrison isn't getting playing time?

Have I missed something on the internet explaining or talking about this?

I saw he tweeted social media where he was sitting on his helmet and cracked a joke making a reference about getting prepped for game time reps or something but when he didn't play at all in the Ravens game it got me thinking.

It's weird and confusing - he didn't even get a helmet for the Raven's game. I'm hoping that Tomlin is throwing the young guys into the fire to grow them up for later in the year. But, Tomlin needs to be careful about losing games due to this philosophy (if that is it)(see Chicago game)

I think the plan going into the season was similar to last year in which they were to give the majority of the early season snaps to Jervis. Giving him one last stretch of games to prove his worth, while keeping James fresh for the second half.
Jervis, as most already knew, did not have it.
James got alot of the snaps down the stretch.

I think same plan for 2017.
Preserve James, while seeing what the new guy had.
Except it was evident early on in pre-season, that Watt had IT.
First two games I think James saw a combined 7 snaps?

Last week he caught the bug that hit Villy and then Bryant.
Combined with Watt back in the line-up.............with Chick and Moats as 2 OLB back-ups.
Don't think we have the luxury of giving 5 OLB's a helmet.

I made a comment during pre-season, that I thought James has gotten entirely too big.
You stick a # 99 or 98 on him and he will look like a NT.
Maybe too big and a loss of quickness. Not to mention closing in on 40.
Was still a better option vs. Chicago than Chick....after it was evident they were intent on running it.

I think Watt has all the intangibles to be a special player.
Will get to the QB. Will chase down back side run plays.
I said in pre-season he has the knack to bat down passes.................and would bat down at least 10 passes this year.
He will tip up one for a pick sometime this year.

That being said.
James is one of my favorite all-time Steelers.
Keep him fresh. But need to start getting him 10-12-15 snaps starting around mid season.
And start getting him in the game for situational pass rushing plays.

Watt, Cam, Tuit, Dupree and James all on the field in 3rd and long could be deadly with all lined up on the line...........with versatility of sending them all or for Watt or Dupree to drop into coverage.
Substitute Hargrave in for Cam or Tuit as a nice third down rotation.

Also, James and Watt have the versatility to rush from either side and up the middle.

It was a mistake v Bears but v Ravens? Steelers had Watt and Tuitt back and love Deebo but he ain't running down on kick off anytime soon. I agree with others: break glass when it gets colder. A fresh Deebo will be a big boost down the stretch, especially when teams have to run the football more.

I believe it's been stated that the mighty Chickillo has made it impossible for James to get on the field.

I wouldve cut Chickillo and signed McCord

I've got no problem transitioning to Watt over Harrison-- playing Chickillo over Deebo is weird

Yes, Chickillo was getting his ass kicked against Chicago. The team was desperate for someone who could set an edge against the run. Wasn't James quoted that he could set the edge at 60 years old?

I believe there is a plan for James Harrison. I believe it is a bad one. Coaches are morons.

Some of that decision is in the hands of the Steelers worst position coach... which leaves it up for debate.

I like the idea to work in the other guys & save James Harrison for when they really need him. But the Steelers needed him to win in Chicago.

I read something this morning about Harrison being a scratch Sunday due to illness. Was in Tribune or Post-Gazette. Not going to bother looking it up.

The Chicago game is the real head scratcher.

Harrison will get 20 snaps our first playoff game.

They’ll work him in more in the second half of the season. They're giving him the first hlf off.

Did they tell him this? If so, why the comments from him previous weeks that he doesn’t know what is going on?

If it was communicated it would seem all parities would be in vosrd and respond accordingly. It’s not like it’s some tactical secret.

I'm sure James Harrison would be THRILLED to practice for weeks and weeks without ever getting to play a snap. Who wouldn't?!?

4 games in and not a single snap. If I’m JH I’m asking Tomlin why I’m wasting my time?

If the answer is we need you later then that’s fine. Provided they’ve told him his.

They needed him in Chicago however and he sat on the bench while the rest of the defense was getting it’s ass handed to it.

Against a team that telegraphed it was not going to be passing the ball.

Yet another 1+1= 2 math question our genius coaches applied calculus to and ended up with a physics answer. The wrong one of course.

So you're saying it was Porter's call not to play JH against the Bears?

Ultimately Tomlin's call....unless, of course, he's a potted fuckin' plant.

Position coach is the one who generally decides which guys play, especially rotations and backups. You can blame the DC or the HC for not saying, "Why the hell is Deebo not going in the game?"

My whole problem with James Harrison and how they are approaching his situation is how stupid the coaching staff are.

Hmmm. They make excuses for Bell and say he is a bit 'rusty' and out of sync because of his time away from camp and not playing the preseason.

They make excuses for Bryant not being fully up to speed and dominant because he was suspended for a year, it will take time for him to get reacclimatized to the speed of the game, etc.

So, now they are, by choice, refusing to give Harrison any snaps at all, keep him sealed in this ziplock bag, and only bring him out when they really need him?

And he is supposed to be able to make any sort of difference at that point, expected to be dominant, a playmaker?

It is obvious that a player needs to be active and getting snaps, be in there with his teammates, have a comfort level, communication, have meaningful reps to be able to step in and contribute.

Last season Harrison after the first 4 games had 128 snaps counts on defense, this year he has 7 snaps. And for all of this talk of how Harrison does not play special teams, well last season he had 38 snaps on ST. Moats does not really play all that much on special teams just as a blocker (the LT?) on punts? You are telling me that Harrison couldn't do that in place of Moats and be the active 4th OLB?

All I know is that Harrison is probably going to go deep into the season then be called up and then probably pull a hamstring because of a long stretch of not playing. They see what no activity did for Bell and Bryant and yet they are on purpose doing it to Harrison, it makes not sense at all.

There is one logical explanation for why he’s not playing...
They believe the other guys are better...hmmm

JH is 40.

I think some of you may be overestimating his impact at this point.
