I'm hoping NE and KC drop a few.....go into the NE game with a 2-game lead on home field, and that game doesn't matter if they take care of HOU and CLE. Plus, NE finishes up at home vs. BUF and NYJ - no gimmees.

If they can get a bye, I'd just as well assume they not shut things down the last week or two. I don't trust this offense to be sharp in a Divisional Playoff game if they haven't played in 2-3 weeks.

I just don't want Ben out there with two teams that might be playing out the stretch. Get him in there for a quarter or two against the Texans but no snaps against the Browns.

The bye comes neatly this year, exactly half way through the season. Here are some thoughts on the remaining regular season schedule:

First game up after the bye is at Indy. After winning 6 of his first 7 games as a head coach following a bye, Tomlin has lost his last 3. This is a big game; conference game against an inferior opponent on the road. Too often that spells trouble, but the colts have not put up much resistance in recent years. How nice would it be to come out and put up some serious points for a change?

The Indy game is followed by 4 (count 'em) consecutive games in prime time. Has to be a record, or at least a tie. The first is a Thursday night game, home against Titans. Players hate the Thursday night games. Big, big advantage (don't have the stats in front of me), I believe to the home team in these games. To play a game on Sunday and then be on the road for another game a few days later is really tough. Big edge to the Steelers here.

After that, the Packers come to town for another Sunday night game after Thanksgiving. Who doesn't love the Sunday night games? Aaron Rodgers is fun to watch, let's be thankful he won't be playing in this one.

The Packers game is followed by the big three that will most likely determine the Steelers playoff seed, with a real shot at home field throughout. At Bungles (watch out for slimeball Burfick) on Monday night is first, followed by home against Ravens, another Sunday night game. The Ravens have looked as bad as a team can look at times this year; so long as the goal is to go out and destroy them (which I'm worried won't be the game plan), this should be a win. Then those fuckers from New England come to town, Sunday, 4:30 game. If I see the defense play a soft zone I'll have a meltdown. I'm actually optimistic (cautiously optimistic) this defense can present problems for Brady this time around.

The season ends with games at Texans (won't be easy, especially after amped up, emotional three game stretch), and home to Clowns (should be easy; will they be winless?).

All in all, an exciting schedule, with 5 of 8 at home, and 4 in a row in prime time. For all their struggles and warts, this is as well positioned the Steelers have been in a long time to get home field throughout the playoffs. If red zone offense can be revamped and be what it should, the number one seed is there for the taking.

Good breakdown. I agree. Also, getting Tuitt and Gilbert back healthy for the stretch run would be fantastic!

Thanks. You’re so right about Tuitt and Gilbert. Fingers crossed on health across the board for the second half. Been pretty lucky so far. I’ve been very impressed with D-Line depth. In fact, kudos to the organization for its pick-ups both inside the draft and out. Tremendous contributions being felt by players new to the team.

Good write up, Shake

We mumbled, bumbled, stumbled our way to 3-2. Thru that span we could see a D that seemed to be playing well and with potential but needed more testing.

We have 3 quality wins the past 3 weeks even with the warts. The good thing is, arrow seems to be pointing up for this team.

We got an enormous break with A. Rodgers out.

It's going to be riveting theater watching this play out the rest of the season.

Thanks. It’s been a crazy first half of the season throughout the league. For awhile it looked tough to get a handle on how things were trending with many teams, but some more consistent patterns are beginning to emerge. I’d love to see Tomlin avoid the pitfalls of lack of concentration and poor game planning that have plagued the Steelers in recent years, particularly against weaker opponents (weaker opponents and the Patriots). I’m getting a good feeling. Hope I’m right.

KC has a tough matchup with Dallas this weekend, but after the bye they face a fairly weak schedule. Buffalo and Dallas are the only teams they play with a winning record from here on out.

NE has the tougher schedule, with 2 games vs. Buffalo and traveling to Pittsburgh & Denver (I like how Denver matches up against NE). But I still think Buffalo collapses at some point.

I really doubt Pittsburgh will lock up a bye (much less home field) prior to Week 17, if even then.

They likely would in Wk14, if they beat NE.

Of course, that won't happen. And they almost certainly will drop another game or two before then. Despite the most favorable schedule they've had in years, they will probably be scrapping and hoping for help going into Wk17 just to get a bye.

That right there is good stuff...Not the fact the Steelers lost 3 in a row...Just something I didn't realize

This game will be a war. Titans have the best offensive tackle combo in the NFL. Nasty physical Oline. Mobile QB. 2 Dangerous backs. This is game is very dangerous. Plus the Steelers south coaching staff return to Pittsburgh

The Steelers need to continue to improve.

A healthy Markus Gilbert will do wonders.

Tuitt is a difference maker.

I do have concerns...My concerns are different than most Steelers fans.

I am concerned with Artie Burns...Making mistakes is human. Not learning from those mistakes makes you a fucking idiot.

The Steelers safety play is a mixed bag.

The Steelers have a major hole at LOLB. I believe the answer is at hand come playoff time. TJ Watt will start at LOLB. James Harrison will start at ROLB.

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots are the measuring stick boys...We must find a way to out score them and I don't trust Haley...That means the defense has to play lights out

Those concerns are alleviated by a few things.

I know the talent of Cameron Sutton. He can play football. He will not come in and start...I think he can contribute a ton on special teams....He also has play making ability as a corner.

LT Walton can play inside and defensive end....Alalalu is getting the love and he deserves it. LT Walton has played very well at times.

Vincenzo and Shazier have improved every week...Small steps have turned into a brisk jog.

I am going to take a major leap of faith about a few things

1. The Steelers are holding back some things on offense. Formations, route combinations, personnel groupings.

2. The Steelers will mix man principles with zone looks...You can play man coverage and bring only 4 in the pass rush leaving two defenders to read and rob the quarterback...Fuck it you can rob with one and double Gronk

3. The Steelers will solve the return game.

The Steelers key to winning regular season games is being fundamentally sound....Talent wise I think the Steelers line up with any team in the NFL. Can the Steelers execute and control the line of scrimmage.

So remember...

The Steelers are holding back some things on offense. You are what you put on tape.

Don't expect it back every week, but nice to see a mini Gospel back.

You bring up Gronk... this is probably crazy but is Watt athletic enough to cover him? Seeing Watt drop and get up to attack passes...could he have the size and athleticism to match Gronk?
