Good grief - I know he was good but to give someone the biggest per year deal in league history after 7 starts seems a bit over the top

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2741 ... =editorial

Feel free to move but these kinds of numbers do impact the Steelers so this seemed like a good place to start.

To me these “biggest ever” contracts should only go to those that have proven over time they can deliver the goods.

7 freaking starts?

Oh well, it’s not our cap.

Bell is going to see this news and go buh buh buh but I play RB & WR....

I’m praying the NFL implements some kind of positional salary cap before it comes time to find Ben’s replacement.

Cause these QB contracts are getting insane and with the limited number of good QBs available, I think you could make the argument they can be just as damaging to a franchise’s long term success as first round picks were before they implemented the rookie pay scale.

Well, when you have $116M in cap space and traded an R2, you want to get a deal done and then you can use the tag on someone else.

Surprised by the guaranteed money - $70M+ can't be right, can it?....remember, this is the same team that gave Kaepernick a big contract structured in a way to minimize risk.

The guy has started a total of 7 NFL games.....in 5 starts with SF, he threw 7 TD's and 5 picks for a 96 rating (obviously becaue of comp% and YPA). Guys tend to get figured out, while others are flash in the pans - truthfuly it's been a dry spell for QB's since Eli/Ben/Rivers/Rodgers/Ryan....many have been "crowned", none have hung on to it.

These perennial suck ass teams with tons of "cap" are ruining the league making moves like this. Washington was doing it for years after Snyder took over. He overpaid a bunch of players to HUGE contracts that ruined his team and drove up the price for other teams to pay their players.

Then you had Oakland doing it and still is; giving washed up Gruden 100 mill. And now the 49ers.

I know Tomlin takes a lot of heat around here, but when his next contract is up, he deserves and will have to get more than Gruden. Can the Steelers afford to pay Tomlin or ANY other head coach 100 mill???

The Steelers are rumored to be wanting to extend Bens contract this off season. Ben deserves much more than Jimmy G, like 5 times more. Them assholes just paid Garrapalo 27 million a year. That just fucked us with Ben's contract extension, in my opinion. Damn teams are stupid! Whats that mean for Cousins contract??? Eventually teams won't be able to keep up and the NFL will turn into MLB with have not small market teams and the "Haves". The Steelers will turn into the Pirates.

That's dumb, but what you pay coaches doesn't count against your cap. But when it comes to players, it's all contractual and guaranteed - players get X% of revenue, and teams have to be very close to the cap on average.....this also explains why you have CLE basically trading cap for Osweiler last year.

So make it so teams can only spend a certain percentage of the cap on any single player.

Teams like Cleveland might actually work to put together a well rounded roster, then.

You'd think the CBA would have been all over something like that. Most of the gains are accruing to the very top players, while the guys who average 3.2 years (like 3/4 of the league) get crumbs on minimum deals.

A guy like VWill kind of gets screwed, while any jagoff QB someone thinks can start a few years gets $20M+.

The flipside of that argument, from a competitive standpoint, is if ranges were more tightly banded then there's not much reason for a player to go to a bad team if they can't pay him a lot more. But the way the cap has been going up, teams basically end-up with 5-6 "franchise" guys....pretty much every team is going to have no problem keeping their 7-8 best player, which is why FA has been such slim pickings.

The patriot way is soon to be no more

Brady to hold out on OTA

I’m sure beli is ready to walk

Whatever Mcdaniels gets as new HC on waiting

I’m sure Ernie Adams isn’t part of the deal

this is pretty damn funny. After Brady taking a hometown discount for so many years, Jimmy G getting paid has flipped the switch and finally made Brady butthurt. I can't blame him, but it's funny who the catalyst was. If I was the GOAT and just saw my backup with 7 starts get paid like that, I'd be annoyed too!

$74 million guaranteed is $14.8 million a year.

That is not that crazy when you can cut and run at any point. I think his contract is all marketing. He can say he is the highest paid, they can build the team around him. Consider the following cap hits in 2017:

Joe Flacco, Baltimore, $24.55 million
Carson Palmer, Arizona, $24.125 million
Kirk Cousins, Washington, $23.943 million
Matt Ryan, Atlanta, $23.75 million
Matthew Stafford, Detroit, $22 million
Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay, $20.3 million
Cam Newton, Carolina, $20.166 million
Philip Rivers, Los Angeles Chargers, $20 million
Eli Manning, N.Y. Giants, $19.7 million
Andrew Luck, Indianapolis, $19.4 million
Drew Brees, New Orleans, $19 million
Russell Wilson, Seattle, $18.8 million
Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh, $18.2 million
Sam Bradford, Minnesota, $18 million
Alex Smith, Kansas City, $16.9 million
Derek Carr, Oakland, $15.7 million
Andy Dalton, Cincinnati, $15.7 million
Tom Brady, New England, $14 million
Mike Glennon, Chicago, $14 million
Jay Cutler, Miami, $10 million
Tyrod Taylor, Buffalo, $9.7 million
Jameis Winston, Tampa Bay, $6.9 million
Marcus Mariota, Tennessee, $6.6 million
Blake Bortles, Jacksonville, $6.57 million
Josh McCown, N.Y. Jets, $6.5 million
Jared Goff, L.A. Rams, $6.4 million
Carson Wentz, Philadelphia, $6 million
Brian Hoyer, San Francisco, $5.3 million
Tom Savage, Houston, $765,146
DeShone Kizer, Cleveland, $899,711
Dak Prescott, Dallas, $635,848
Trever Siemian, Denver, $628,196

They pay him $14.8 million for 2 years to try him out for sure. You pay him $14.8 for the 3rd year and if he is not working out, this would be the year you cut and run, but you’d be happy to use him as a back-up to finish the season. You are now at $44.4 million with $29.6 million to go.

Would someone trade for a back-up with $29.6 left on the contract? Probably not.

So they are risking $29.6 million. That is using $14.8, which is probably low for a starting QB. If you boost it to $20 million in the three year scenario, only $14 million is at risk in the 4th year where you would make the big move to your new franchise QB.

Doesn’t seem like that big of a risk considering the cap hits above.

I love it. Paying an unproven QB could backfire. An awful lot of money to gamble your franchises future on. I hope this does backfire and whiners are irrelevant for another 20 years.... :D

The 49ers have eleventy billion dollars in cap space...this isn’t a horrible gamble, as much as it may seem so.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Garoppolo is very good. He makes some nice throws but really fails to read coverages at times and forces it.

Yeah jeems you know as well as I do it's a process. How much money a franchise has means squat if they aren't smart with it. We'll see....

Oh I know.

In the past, paying an unproven QB has never worked, so I definitely think the odds are against them.

And Lakecrest above shows that even though the total contract is $137.5 M, it seems to be structured so they can cut him without a huge cap hit after a couple of years.

That's even better!

Sounds like the Boston Herald is doing what all the major news outlets do these days. Unnamed, unconfirmed source.......NO Problem! If it's anti-President , just print it!
