If we did a deal like that, it would count $4M to the 2018 cap based on overthecap.com and their calculator. You just set the base low in year 1, but dont go crazy juicing the down the road salaries.

If we did any LB like that, it would count $4M to the 2018 cap. Obviously you better be damn sure about the guy because you cant cut the player until 2021.

2018- 4M cap hit
2019 - 11M cap hit
2020 - 12M cap hit
2021 - 13M
2022 - 13M

I can't see any FA LB commanding much more than this.

I don't see why we don't pull the trigger on this. The space is THERE. Naysayers be damned!!

Your naysayers are EMR, Colbert and Tomlin.

We do what we do.

i think you could get Nigel Bradham more a few mil less per year than that too.
He would be a great addition at ILB.

The money is always there. It just depends on how badly you want to tie your hands in the future, perhaps having to purge some good players as "cap casualities" down the road.

The Steelers have never operated that way. Colbert never looks at a single year beyond meeting the NFL requirement to get under the cap. He doesn't sign deals that will force him to cut someone the following year that he wasn't planning to cut.

They could do this deal because they think Bell is walking next year, and Shazier won't be back. But if they actually sign Bell long-term, then you've already committed like half your cap to just 10 players.

They should try to get Ben to tell them when he really thinks his career ends and just time it to be loaded with talent until then and have the purge happen the off season after he retires, that next year they will become INSTANT GARBAGE anyways, there's no "next man up" at Franchise QB.

Agreed, but there are other big contracts due in the coming years. Whether Ben plays 3 years, or 4 or 5....not much of an issue going $40M+ into the "red". When Ben retires, assuming you go to a C1 QB, that's at least $15M per year right there. So you see what kind of cap space is created in just a few years after a franchise QB retires. And you usually have 1-2 guys due/rolling off every year.

Plus, if you look at the current team, who do they have that will command big money in a few years? JuJu, possibly Watt. That's it. Your OL are all heading to a C3. AB might be too much for a C3 on a team rebuilding. Tuitt and Hargrave didn't earn their new contracts last year. Secondary has some promising guys but otherwise a dumpster fire.

It's a frickin' crime if Ben goes a decade without another SB appearance, much less another ring.

Sigh. You keep saying this. Without a franchise QB it is extremely unlikely to win a super bowl, agreed (although teams have done it.) However, not having a franchise QB does NOT mean the Steelers have to be GARBAGE.

For 31 NFL teams...two weeks later, Steelers FA dumpster dive period begins.

Still don't see an ILB worthy of being given a contract like that.

Me? I take one third of that money and give Kevin Pierre-Louis a 4 year, $18 million contract with a $5 million signing bonus. Yeah, he has some legal trouble to navigate and maybe a suspension but the elite athleticism and on the field play and work ethic and swagger are all there in abundance. So, he misses say the first 4 games to suspension, but after than he would be a great fit and signing.

It honestly is shocking to me how desperate the Steelers have become at the ILB position just after one unfortunate injury to one player. Kinda makes one question the personnel department. Why wouldn't there be a contingency plan in place? Why haven't there been any personnel moves to shore up that contingency plan? My bad..., Than, That? Same thing brutha.

I agree about one unfortunate injury. Let us use that sentiment in regards to RBs.

So, what happens if we lose Bell to injury? Is Connor or Fitz going to give us anything close to average performance for the position? Other than Ben, Bell is the one player that can do down to injury, suspension, etc, and we really have this dramatic falloff to the backup. Some might say, add Brown to that list, but you know what?, we do have JuJu and Bryant and Rogers at that position. Yeah, losing Brown would hurt but maybe it would not be devastating.

This is why I want the Steelers to draft a RB high, like round 1 even, this draft. What is the contingency plan in place at RB? Is the plan to count on Connor rehabbing from injury? Or Fitz? The RB position, the depth there might just be the scariest position on the whole roster, even worse than safety.

But I wouldn't save cap space to be 7-9 or 9-7, why not be 4-12 and get a very high pick and shot at a top QB in the draft instead?
